Paint chips revisited

Couldn't stand the dirty truck, so had to wash it last night in 32 degree weather, at night, driveway icing up as I sprayed the truck off, snow all around.......Went out this morning in the daylight, and you guessed it.....paint chips all over the front of the rear fenders. Truck is red, build date 06/05, mudflaps on. Guess living in the northeast with snow and salt is going to be a pain. Must move down south !! I love this truck, but I'm going to have a heartattack soon. I walk around this damned thing every morning just to keep up on things. Acorn dents in the hood, now paint chips.....what's next ?

55reasons, more explanation is requested ! Line-x on the outside of the fenders ? Can they match the red color ? Maybe I should just move to the desert. Got any homes for sale in your area ?
Do you have some pics to post....I'm curious as to were this is happening....

Yup, Line-X everything from the rockers down....!!!! Just kidding as I know most aren't willing to have that "look".... Line-X can't be sprayed in color with any great efficiency unlike rhinoliner or reflex etc.. But the softer "rubber-type" liner are crap anyway...

I was all set to have mine done, and then decided to hold off until I start to notice some damage worth covering up / protecting against. No doubt that if I had your probs I would have already done it.

As far as moving here, be careful what you wish for. A week here and you'll be hooked for life. AZ grew by 800,000 people just last year alone, and if you're gonna get in, do it quick because the housing is going through the roof. My house has increased in value 268% in 4 years. Do the math!:D Oh-yeah, and once they are on the market, the average time before sale is 3-5 DAYS... I just sold mine a couple weeks ago and it was on the market for a whole 29 minutes!!! I'll be moving out on the 14th of Jan and putting a fat wad of dough in my pocket......

See for yourself!:

And so it begins . . . .
So much for all the rumors that Toyota changed the paint last spring to correct the chipping problem.
You're probably not going to get a repaint job from Toyota at this point because you're truck is too old. Last winter, when our trucks were all chipped just a few weeks after we bought them, Toyota offered to repaint the affected areas as a courtesy because we had brand new trucks.
Your best bet at this point is to get running boards to help prevent any more damage. If Toyota refuses to repaint, you can try turning it into your insurance.
I would think that Toyota had to fix the problem as a warranty obligation and not because they were being "nice" because they were new... I haven't read the fine print or anything, but it has always been my understanding that the initial bumper to bumper warranty covers paint defects and wear due to OEM quality deficiencies...

Wrong?
55reasons, sounds sort of like the Wash. D.C. area for housing costs. Planning on moving back there in about 2 years.

Taconick, Yep..........and so it begins......exactly what I was thinking. Thought maybe I had squeaked by the old paint chip problem. Truck isn't even 6 months old yet. There will be many more Tacoma owners with the same problems soon. Winter hasn't even really hit us hard here yet. Can't wait to see what the paint looks like by the end of winter. Should be down to bare metal by then. Suggest those of you who live in the good old snow belt, wash the truck up and take a look. On mine it does NOT show up until the truck has completely dried. If the area is wet, it will not show.

Will try the picture thing, as soon as I feel like playing with posting them up. Imageshack should probably do it. I've already taken the pictures, but the hellacious big so need to downsize them a bit.

Pics. for all to see:

Now that I think about it, my 2004 Tacoma had black rubber fender flares and in about the same location on the rear fenders, they were also sandblasted. Just looks worse because of the paint. So this isn't a problem with just the 2005/2006 trucks, it has been happening for some time I would think. Maybe some of you that have had previous year Tacomas can comment further. To be honest I think the pictures are making it look a little worse than it actually is. Nevertheless, I'm not exactly thrilled !! This is on the rear fenders, both sides, directly behind the end of the double cab. The front of the bed I guess. You can even tell that the rubber that seperates the fender flare and the bed, is sandblasted down a bit. I repeat....build date 06/05, radiant red, mud flaps ON truck, NO running boards.

You know what you guys should do?

Find a central location, get all of your trucks together and parade into a dealership. Form a line about 150 people deep in the dealership and one at a time request that they fix it.

Have somebody record video of the whole thing. If the dealership gives you guys the runaround, it will be on video. Get video of the guy saying that it's not a manufacturer issue 150 times. Kick a copy to 60 minutes (or whatever the equivalent is these days), and another copy to all of your local news stations.

I bet within 48 hours you all get a phone call about a free paintjob, and within the month there will be a TSB for it to take care of everybody else....

A little extreme? Yes. But sometimes..........................

Here's mine. These are the second set of fender flares.

Wow! I have same build date, and live in northeast (Rhode Island) and haven’t had any chips. Do you do a lot of highway driving?

I've got close to 10,000 on it. I drive a good bit on that wonderful PA turnpike (POS), in fact all roads in PA are POS ! I'm telling you though......I washed my truck probably every two or three days up until about 1 1/2 months ago. When we started getting snow and ice, I cut down on the washing. Did NOT see this damage a month and a half ago. This has all happended in a very short time.
I think it's weird that with my build date and where / how I drive my truck that I don't have this problem....

I'm just gonna walk outside one morning and there is going to be a pile of paint chips in the driveway and the truck will just be completely primer from the roof down I guess..:D
In reply to the post above about this being a warranty issue and Toyota standing behind defective paint, forget about it. The warranty doesn't cover damage due to environment, road debris, etc., etc., etc. And Toyota will NEVER admit that the paint is defective. So Toyota, well, at least some dealers, was offering a courtesy paint job for new owners, which consisted of repainting just the lower sections and blending them into the rest of the body panels. Pretty much a cheap half-a$$ paint job that detracts from the value of the truck.

I spent last winter in PA and it was brutal. PennDOT throws crushed shale rock all over the roads, and that's what caused thousands of chips on my truck in 5 weeks. The dealer let me ride out the winter with it, and then repainted my truck in May. I live in NH now and I don't think the damage will be all that bad--all they put on the roads up here is brine solution or sand--no rocks, as far as I can tell.

You should still take it into your dealer and have them document the damage. Who knows? They might offer you the courtesy paint job.

I also have a good bit of chips in my paint. I live in Va and drive a dbl cap 4x4 indigo blue, not sure when my build date. I took mine to my dealer and they rambled on about how it's from gravel on the road and blah...blah...blah. I have had tube steps for a good 6 mnths and I told them that it should be covered under warranty. The service manager told me to bring it back when I'm closer to my warranty running out and he would paint it again. He did tell me some bullshit about how the new paint job wouldn't look as good as when it came from the factory. I told him that if the chips get any worse I'm trading my truck in for a nissan.........he changed his tune. Right now I'm using the touch up paint sparingly and it seems to be working. I just got done washing and waxing today since the temps were in the mid 50's.
You need to get his promise to repaint it in WRITING before he conveniently forgets when it comes time...

Seriously.
Is this only happening in areas of extreme cold temps? I've read about this issue on other forums and in tacoma reviews online.

I think it's more widespread in areas where they treat the roads for snow/ice. I have a little bit of the sandblast effect just in front of the rear lower wheel wells. I got the DeeZee tube steps over the summer, and they have helped, it doesn't appear that it's gotten any worse since I put them on.
excellent. thank you. :)
