That's right. The paint code isn't in the VIN, although a dealer can lookup the VIN in a database and get the color.
If you just want the color code, look at the label in the driver's door jamb as KdF said. Look for a line that's labeled "C/TR"; the 3-character code corresponding to the C (before the slash) is your paint code.
