painting emblems

Well i just came to this idea when i saw a silver gen5 with black emblems. i like the way it stands out. So now i came to a conclusion that i want this for my beige gen3. Now the question would be what kind of paint should i use? should i prime this as well? In a way i dont really want to remove the emblems. Just kinda want to paint them while its on. But i don't know how safe this is.

recommend removing them.

Bought my car on a saturday and it came with 'gold' badges. Stopped by the paint shop on the way home and bought cans of primer and semi gloss black.
Sanded, painted and remounted by Sunday evening, including bbq and drinks. Take your time and do it right. You will never be able to do as good a job if you leave them on. Got lots of compliments and it looks just a little sportier. Glad I went black instead of white (car's color). I have waxed my car several times since and its still holding up well.

Use the blinky search button on how to remove. And choice is yours on what you want to do.
im too cheap to do custom grille so i painted the emblem graphite using the dupli-color wheel paint. 4 coats of it and 2 weeks later it still looks good.

i also did my interior dash trim with the paint.
Well.. i have a good idea on how to take them off. But reapplying them is the harder part because its like all prefectly even. I know i have bad judgement on these typs of things. I was thinking of marking them before i remove them. hehe

But the main question that i hear about is that some people "claim they have holes from the emblems" which i dont believe is true. Because i've viewed mines and there isn't holes its just a tape or w/e they used.

What kind of black paint did you use amerikim ?
I used a generic aerosol acrylic that dries semi-flat. Cant remember brand name, but it was an outdoor paint. If you have gen 3, you have lots of holes, just warm up before trying and get some GooGone. For remounting I used the thinnest clear strong 3M thingies. Someone mentioned a scraper when I did the search, it seemed like a good idea to save your car's paint.
LIke I said, I hated the gold trim and figured I would dump it.

Edit: Just remembered it's not semiflat but semi gloss. LOL

They have holes in the rear, the grilles emblem is attached by two screws.
yeah...you might wanna use like a wax pencil to mark where the emblems go if you dont think you can get them on straight, or washable paint(kids stuff)

you'll want to wash the hell out of the emblems to make sure there is no dirt or oily residue on them, then prime them(your choice) then paint. scuff up the emblems and paint before and between coats.

incase you arent too learned on painting...alot of small, even coats is better than one heavy coat that runs.

damn dude your putting that paint on eerything huh? why not do your wheels too:lol:
make sure you dont use testors crap... thats what i used and its crapping out on me. they cant stand the elements, but that makes sense since their paint is for models and stuff that stays indoors.

run a search for more info... trust me, everything you need is on these forums
thanks for the link. wait wait wait. so they really do have holes in all the emblems? i would under stand the toyota symbol to have it but not the other emblems. grr this seriously makes me want to rethink the whole thing.

question about your link. in the close up shot about the toyota emblem. There is mark ups is that the usage of bondo to where the holes were?
mark ups... you mean around the emblems? you might be talking about the paint... yea, my paint is peeling in those areas, thats just the way it was already when i got the car (paint was in not-so-good condition). i didnt modify the holes or anything, because the emblems have pegs that go into the holes for proper alignment.
i have a beige gen3 and painted both of my toyota insignias black with some like rustoleum stuff. no sanding no nothing, not that i recommend this, but i just washed em up good and sprayed taht stuff on. came out pretty nice and smooth
duplicolor wheel paint man. just wash and paint the emblems.
TRDjibz did you have holes when you removed your emblem as well?

ryu- i'm talking about the marks right under the close up shot of the word toyota. Doesn;t look like paint chiping to me. but the mark runs along the bottom of the word " Toyota"

How much is dupi wheel paint?
its not paint chipping... its paint peeling, but the clear coat is peeling off the paint and the paint is peeling off the trunk. trust me dude, its the paint.
ok kool thanks. because i thought removing the emblems left that mark. Because then i wouldn't do it. I assumed you use goo-gone or something to remove it?

How much is goo-gone ? I cant find a decent price for this junk. I went to ACE, Truevalves, auto shops. I was only able to find like a little spray bottle of12oz or 16oz of "painters spray" for like 7$
goo gone should be at home depot or even autozone. ive seen it at those places, but i already had some in my garage so i didnt have to buy it. i used goo gone, dental floss, and a blow dryer. be patient when you do it, i almost snapped my emblems in half.

about $5 a can at autozone/discount auto parts. enuff to do two wheels very thoroughly with like 10 coats each or about 200 emblems. :p mine's all pewter on the front.
