Okay so with the arrival of new rims soon (have yet to buy them but will buy within the next 3 weeks) I wanted to know if anyone here has painted the rear brake drums in a 10.5 gen Corolla?

I was going to remove any rust on them, prime them, then hit it with some spray paint. Not sure how hot these drums get though so I'm unsure if i should go with high temp paint instead?

Also, I'd like to replace the front discs with some aftermarket brakes, (EBC I think since I hear they are decent?) and while I'm at it, I was wondering if there is a way to convert those rear drums to discs? If not that's where the paint will come in.
Don't want to see rusty drums behind rims :)

Thank you again guys!!

Rears can be converted to discs but it is a big project. Best way is to try and find a junked XRS for donor parts. I just did a quick scrape on my rear drums and then sprayed with Rustoleum. Paint has held up fine.

High temp Rustoleum? or just good 'ol Rustoleum?
Cool, thank you! I'll read over that thread.

I hear 90% of the braking is done in the front so maybe it's not worth the money and time to convert...
Will have to look into the whole process.

No problem. As for the rear disc brakes themselves, they are definitely better at stopping but you have to think about how you use your car. If you're just going to daily drive you're Corolla, then the rear drums are fine since as you said, 90% of a car's braking goes to the front wheels. However, if you are going to race you're car on a track for example, rear disc brakes will stop you much better than drums due to the fact that you will have less brake fade with discs. Plus, there is much more choices of performance disc brake pads and rotors than performance drums.

Now, if you want to get the rear discs for it's looks, then that's fine. Many people convert to rear discs just for the looks. So, if you think the looks of the discs over the drums are worth the price, then I'd say do the swap.

Converting would purely be a looks thing honestly. The corolla is my daily driver to work, no racing planned sadly =/ (no track around here that I know of lol)

I'll crack off the rear steels and see how bad the drums look. My guess? not that rusty honestly. I hope. I might hit them and the front calipers with an orange paint. I think orange works with the magnetic grey considering the stock radio and steering wheel radio button lights are an amber/orange colour to begin with. :)

Rear drums were sandblasted and then hit with 2 coats of Tremclad rust paint "Real Orange". They look great and the paint is holding up very well!

Next weekend I plan on painting the front calipers to match so I'll leave you with these pics so far:

I always paint drums and rotors with standard semigloss black paint. Rustoleum and Krylon both work fine and last very well... Obviously, you don't paint the face of the rotors, but I always paint the center and edges when I install new wheels. Who wants to see old rusty parts through a new shiny wheel?

I did a simple refinish on my Camry

Ooooh that looks really clean! Nice!!

I finally managed to get around to painting the front calipers.
Good thing too, they were starting to seize up! :surprise:

I had to get new caliper sliders, the OEM factory ones had a rubber ring on one slider for each caliper. The new ones from NAPA Auto parts do not have the rubber because the rubber would cause the sliders to seize up. Go figure, that must be why mine were stiff!

Didn't wash the car yet so these pics will have to do, the stock steel rims go on soon with winter tires on 'em.
