The unprotected electric parking brake switch near cup holder is exposed to any liquid spilled when replacing a cup in the holder. Switch is not covered in the warranty and cost of replacement is about $350. Why would Toyota replace the simple backup safety of a mechanical petal which can be applied at any time if the brakes fail - with an electric switch which would not work if the electrical system failed or water damage to the switch shorted it out ??

The point of the electric brake goes beyond what you're thinking. You must have the XSE or XLE. These models has the electric brake because of full dynamic crusie control. You can set your crusie control in traffic and it will stop and go while keeping its distance. The electric brake is utilized while doing this. If you're having an issue getting water all over your parking brake switch, I'd suggest a towel or some form of covering over top of it to prevent this from happening. I've never had this issue.

Do you have a picture of the location? I am interested. Otherwise it would make sense for dynamic cruise control.

Picture of the location of what? If you're talking about the electric parking brake it's on the rear wheels.

IIRC, the parking brake is electronic, no cables.
I'm talking when the brake pedal goes electronic. Someone said that ths failsafe is a clutch for when there is no power. I like mechanical reliability in certain components.

I've noticed that if you step on the brake while the car is already braking for you (ie adaptive cruise or a panic stop) the pedal is really stiff. I wonder what's going on there.

As in no hydraulics?? That would be very interesting...

Even the EV's are still using hydraulic brakes. It would be quite a while before they will come out with that. Since safety is a concern

Hydralics is still there. But there is no physical connection to the master cylinder. At least, that is as far as I know.
