Performance heads

since camry engines only have the economical head (like the f in 3vz-fe), i was wondering what could be done to either turn it into a performance head or if there was an aftermarket item available... reason being if my car was ever supercharged i think it would benefit greatly from it

there used to be a guy on the west coast USA around Washington or Oregon named Jim from Foreign Affairs. He made hi-flow heads for the 1MZFE.
Last I talked to Shiftgate Performance, he was making heads for someone. I have been meaning to check in with him.

Yeah, I don't know where Jim went. 1mz and 3vz are interchangable right? aren't the heads/intake manifold the only difference?
^^ really? then it wouldnt be too hard fitting a 1mz into my car which has a 3vz??

anways what i wanted to know in particular was if porting and stuff like does anything?
Porting... YES!!! Porting is your best friend. More air/fuel is wonderful.

And with better flow, your engine scavanges better. Allowing for more power (because of efficencey) out of each detination.
^^ so you think its worth it for a lightly tuned V6 without a supercharger? i have heard it wont do much without forced induction, but then Gran Turismo sed its an essential mod for NA engine! (good ol GT). it porting like having a bigger throttle body?... slight gains at higher rpm and crapper low end torque?? because i dont really want that.
oh and my Unichip will be able to tune any indifferences with the A/F ratios so theres no prob with that
porting and polishing will work on any engine, even if it is stock. you dont need a turbo or supercharger to get results from porting and polishing. you will see better hp numbers in an NA engine from this but you will see higher numbers from a forced induction engine.
better intake/exhaust flow helps to better scavange the cylinder (scavanging is the clearing of exhaust gasses from they cylinder). Stock engines still have burnt air/fuel in the cylinder during the next firing. Porting your intake and exhaust will help to clear out that useless exhaust gas. And thus, it will give you more power on each stroke:D

It's worth it in everyway! I would do that before even thinking about F/I.

Used to get all my engines ported and polished. Its great. Its the personal touch as usually the ports are cast so are rough and crude.
WARNING, make sure the guy who is doing this knows what he is doing or you will be introduced to mismatched ports where flow is different. There is no workaround and once metal is removed ... new parts time. Porting is when the intake and maybe exhaust ports are enlarged, this includes both manifolds so that they are the same shape and size. Lots of manual work. If you are there, check into shaving the head. This will lower the head, reducing combustion chamber size slightly, increasing compression. You will feel the difference with a shaved head. You will also now be burning premium gas- don't cheap out.
You could also stay a little conservative and just polish the ports, getting them to a mirror finish, but I still recommend a shave head, need to bring it to a machine shop thats done it before.
Make sure you do your head overhaul at the same time, valve seals and reseating, change your timing belt, gaskets(dont get the cheap stuff),etc.If you don't want to shave your head, always can do high compression pistons or just replacement rings.
If done right, you would have just renewed your engine and added years to it.

They didn't put the 1mzfe in 3rd gen Camry's over there?

Nope. there was no update... which sux cos i want a 1mz-fe. its funny cos the gen3.5 lights and some other parts were put on the Holden Apollo... where Holden is the enemy (who i also work for!).

If you want to pull teeth, compression is your friend.

You have to find someone who knows what they are doing, or you will have one messed up head/engine.

EDIT: Rethought milling down head, go with high compression pistons instead.
if your serious about this i'll ask someone that i know works on 3sgte engine and 5sfe engine and see what he says.
Alright, I am coming out of the closet! Not for that reason.
I have been working with Ben at shiftgate performance to get a Head Package available. All we have to do is install the heads and head back to the dyno. I hope to have this done by the middle of July. I know that’s a ways off, but it should be worth the wait.

I knew about that:) I just didn't remember who he was making them for. And I didn't know if it was a one time thing, or up for sale. So I kept my mouth shut.

I can't remember, what engine were they for?

3vz right now. Once we find out how much these make, we will work on another engine.
