Just had custom dual exhaust put on my 2012 HL. Had my custom muffler shop do the work. They cut off the factory resonator at front pipe coming out of the big muffler (looking from the rear of vehicle). Then they fabricated a y pipe they welded on the the front of the muffler and welded two pipes out of the y pipe that went on each side of spare tire and out the back of HL with two stainless steel magnaflow tips. I did not like the way the exhaust sounded at wot, it sounded really metalic sounding. So I wanted to put the factory resonator back on between the cat and the muffler but there was not room because of the diameter of the resonator was to fat. So they welded a bottle type resonator right after the cat because that was the location the heat shield was. It sounds a little better at wot but not the way it sounded when it was factory. It sounds a tad louder at idle thru highway speeds. Over all I'm happy with the sound and love the way it looks, because the dual tips out the back is the look I wanted in the first place. It cost me $360 + tax. see pics below.

MB,

Thank you for answering my request, they really do look good  and it's one of the items Toyota needs to OEM on the Highlander.
Looks pretty good, but not sure it's worth it to me. Not sure why it's isn't standard on at least a Limited but cut into the bumper to get them off the ground more. Dual exhaust has become standard fare on about every other brand's Crossovers and most cars. I would definetly like them on mine if they were factory installed. I guess my only question would be could such a modification effect the warranty in any way?

I agree Toyota should offer factory duals as most of all suv's and crossovers do. I would like the cut out in the bumper trim to make it look more factory and to bring the tips up a little also. This is the reason I had the tips slightly pointing down so the pipes the tips are welded on to could be tucked up under the frame more as not to see them from the side view. I ask my dealer here in Maryland about any warranty issues and they said as long as from the cat to the engine was not modified there would not be any warranty issues, but they did say the muffler warranty would be void as the pipe between the muffler and the factory resonator was cut to remove the resonator. That is no big deal to me as I will replace the muffler myself when need. By the time it's needed my warranty will be up anyway. The shop that did my truck said that they get brand new vehicles in from the dealer with 5-10 miles on them that they do custom duals on that was requested by a customer thats buying the vehicle with single factory exhaust. Over all I really like the look and I didn't notice any difference in performance and no service engine light.

The Magnusson Moss act says that a manufacturer cannot void a warranty because an owner decided to use a non factory part, as long as that part was manufactured to do the same job(e.g you buy a Fram oil filter instead of Toyota filter). This is not a part that was "manufactured" to do the same job, this is a custom one off exhaust. In addition, he removed the factory systems that came in place(Factory Resonator). I can almost guarantee you that Toyota will not warranty any emissions related repairs, or exhaust repairs because part of the original exhaust system has been removed. While I'm not against modifications, I don't see why in this case? Who drives around at WOT?

Anyway just saying.

I only did it for the looks of the dual pipes out the back. My sales person at the dealer and the muffler shop who did the work told me it would not void any warranties. The muffler shop also told me that they do new vehicles off the lot of the dealership for customers that wanted dual exhaust in place of factory single exhaust. I know the warranty for the muffler and the now missing resonator will not be covered, but don't see how by changing the one pipe coming out of the muffler to two pipes will void any emissions related warranty issues. I will be taking my HL in for it's 5,000 mile tire rotation and check soon. I will ask about any issues that could effect my warranty for the exhaust modifications that were done to my HL. If they tell me it could effect my warranty for emission related problems that might arise in the future, I will have the muffler shop put it back to stock exhaust until my warranty is up and then have them weld the duals back on. I guess I should of checked with the sevice dept. first at the dealer before I made the modifications. I just took the word of my sales person at the dealer and the muffler shop. Thanks for the heads up nov0798. I have a feeling the dealer will look for any reason not to cover something under warranty.

I like your dual exhaust set up. I also went with a dual but with quad tips. Ordered off ebay for like $25 bucks a pop, stainless steel finish with beveled edges. Sound didn't change much, factory resonator (secondary muffler) was eliminated and sound is a little louder. If you listen closely, the exhaust pulsates like in a big V8 truck with exhaust, but not nearly as loud or obnoxious.

Here is a pic, hope you enjoy.

That looks really nice, I like the quad tips. Can you post some pics of the underside of the pipes showing how they ran the pipes off the main muffler? Did you keep the factory muffler set up? Also have you noticed any more cabin vibration from the exhaust when engine is cold @ 900-1000 rpm's when it is cold out side.

Hi All,
Thanks for the interest. Here is the job from what I took from my iphone.

The welding looks to not be of the best quality, but I cannot complain. The shop welded in a custom "y" splitter from the end of the factory "main muffler."

Here are the exhaust diagrams from the highlander 2.7 and 3.5 respectively.

So basically, the shop eliminated #10 in my 2.7, or if I had the 3.5, they would have eliminated #16. These are the secondary mufflers/resonators that help the tone of the factory exhaust. Eliminating them does nothing to really help with output. The "y" splitter is welded to #6 (2.7), and #12 (3.5).

As for resonance, I do feel a slight more vibrations at times in idle when I'm at a stop light. Being in Hawaii, our cold is probably not the same as yours, i.e. 67 degrees, but haven't really noticed any more vibrations at any rpms. It is slightly louder in the cabin though, especially in the rear of the cabin, but from what I've heard, the 2.7 is louder than the 3.5 because the 3.5 comes with more sound deadening for its luxury appeal. Our 2.7 before the exhaust mods was already pretty noisy through most rpms. I tend to drive the car only in tiptronix mode, take advantage of the 6 speed, but that probably has nothing to do with it.

Thanks.

Thanks for the quick reply with the pics. They look like they did your 2.7 the same as my 3.5. I might have to go back and get them to weld on the quad tips as I like the way yours look much better. Looks more aggressive. If you don't mind me asking how much did the shop charge you? I paid $360.00 thats including the stainless steel tips.
Thanks again.

Thanks Masterbender777.
Your shop is pretty cheap compared to mine. I went to Exhaust Systems Hawaii which is a reputable shop here on Oahu, but they originally wanted $140-$150 bucks a piece for each dual tip. I forget the name brand, but it must have been borla or magnaflow or something. I didn't care at that point because it was too expensive. So at least ESH would install customer provided parts. So I bought my tips on ebay, generic, $25 a piece. I paid a total of $290 with a cash payment (a little bargaining) to get a discount for the labor, and piping. Hope that helps. (prices tend to be more expensive here as you probably already know)
