Well the good new, from what I hear, is that Toyota's development program for them is running in to major trouble.

The valves close too fast with too much force!
Woot for infinitely variable valve timing and piggyback ecu's to change that =)

can't they modulate the magnetic force? or is a solenoid only an on/off deal? i know renualt was trying to do this with their f1 car, but at 19k rpm, it's just too hard to get it to work right.

i've never heard of rotary valves...must do some research.
