Hi

This week I started hearing this whining or hissing noise coming from the engine bay. The noise is always there and increases as the engine accelerates.

I was afraid that it was coming from the engine itself. After careful inspection it seems to be coming out from the power steering pump. I took the serpentine belt out and briefly ran the engine. The noise was gone. This confirmed in part my theory that the PS pump was making the noise.

Before having it inspected and probably replaced, I would like to see if flushing the pump would fix the noise. I read how to do it over the net and feel that is not that hard. There are two hoses connected to the PS reservoir. I am supposed to disconnect one so that it would drain the reservoir while I feed fresh fluid through the other. How will I know which one is the returning hose?

Thanks

I experienced the same problem. My mechanic first flushed the pump, but the noise was still there. At last I decided to have it replaced. After the pump was dismounted, I saw a lot of sludge in it.

After all, flushing the pump is still a good starting point.
