Hey guys,

I have a Gen 4 camry and I have added the SE rims off a 2003 camry. I thought they were perfect till I went to get new tires this morning. We put the same size tires on and they were rubbing horribly. We went with a smaller size tire, and they still rubbed, but not as bad. I can free spin the wheel now when I lift up the car, but when I first bought it, there was slight rub. I have no spacers on my car and was wondering what could be the problem.

Also can someone explain what is changing when I go from a 225/60/16 size tire to a 205/55/16. I am confused on the second number, does the tire get wider when you have a smaller number or viseversa?

Last question, Will the rims off a Lexus model with 225/50/17 fit a gen 4? I am not sure of the car, but I am pretty sure these are the rims.

I'm no tire expert, but I believe the second number "55" is how tall the tire is. Meaning, the measurement from where the rim touches the tire, to the part where it touches the road. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong...

I don't know about the rims, but tires are measured as follows:

xxx/yyRzz

"xxx" = width of tire in millimeters (i.e. 215 = 215mm wide)
"yy" is the aspect ratio, it is the height of the side wall as a percentage of the width (i.e. 215/45 = 215mm x 45% = 96.75mm tall)
"zz" is the diameter of the wheel (i.e. 215/45R17 is on a 17" wheel with a width of 215mm and a side wall that is 96.75mm tall)

225/60/16 size tire to a 205/55/16

well...the posts above explain what they mean....but I don't see how you can even ask about these sizes, since their rolling diameter is REALLY REALLY different...as in the 225/60/16 is not only wider, but also ALOT taller than the 205/55/16...they wouldn't even go on the same car

as for why they rub- you probably need spacers

I'm presuming that they rub on the strut side of the wheel?

Yes, they rub on the inner side of the tire. Those 2 sizes were the sizes they changed on my car. I used to have 225/60/16, and now I have on 205/55/16.

I dont really want spacers but is this my only option? Or are there tires that are skinner and sill fit a 17 or a 16?


I have a friend who needs to get rid of his rims and tires of the one I posted, I was wondering if I could just swap and what kinds of tires would fit without rubbing?

PS. Thanks for the explaination. So if I want the height pretty high, would have to look into a bigger second number, like 205/60/16. Right?

well, 205/60/16 or 205/65/16 on the v6's are the stock sizes

so I'm not sure who recommended you try 225/60/16 in the first place



and to answer your question, yes, 205/60/16 would have more sidewall than 205/55/16- it will have 5% more sidewall (5% of 205mm)

personally, I would just use some 5mm spacers and leave it at that

Nobody talked about offset.

The offset for the wheels from the 03 It's + 50 and the offset for your camry It's +40. I have those in my car and I put spacers in the back

225/50r17 will NOT work. Im on 215/50r17 and im already rubbing when i turn hard left or right going 15MPH+.

What size are your original tires? 195/70-14 or 205/65-15? That will really help us determine what size tires you should put on the wheels and keep the speedometer accurate. It should say on the plate where it states the tire pressures on the driver's door or door jam.

To fit the 03 Camry wheels, you should get spacers for the rear at least because the offset is off by about 10mm.

Also for the people with 03 rims, can you give me links of the spacers you have used? I dont know alot about spacers and would like to use something that someone else can vouch for. Thanks again!

lol. mines are 45 offset. it leaves me 2.5-3mm away from the struts

well, offset is kind of presumed since otherwise, the wheels would fit perfectly


as for the 225/45/17 comment...it WILL work...but of course, depending on your offset...plenty of use run 225/45/17...I've run it for years...I didn't have problems with it until this winter, but only because the offset of my winter rims (which I used to run 205/60/17 on) has an offset of 35 instead of the more flexible 42 or 55

Touring Camry,

On the inside door sill, I see 195/70/14. I am not really worried about keeping the same speed accuracy, because I plan on driving this camry to the ground. And If I do somehow sell it, I will sell with original steelies. What I want to have though is a tire that dosent rub if it dosent have to. Also smoothness and not feeling the road is somewhat of a factor.

Ok, I think I am just confusing myself even more as I look at this. I found this rim,

Offset = 45mm
Dimensions = 17" diameter, 7" width


Will 205/45/17 tire work on this rim?

When I convert from 7 in to mm I am getting ~180mm. Is that right? Or should I just do 215?

i'd stick to 215/50- because it has a wider foot print and the sidewall on a 215/50 is taller than the 205/45 (these are like- civic tires for 17") which in turn will give you good cushioning for a better ride.

If the offset is 45mm, you might be able to get away with a 215/45-17 tire but I can't say that for certain. You may need 2 or 3mm spacers.
