Okay, so I have an 1989 Mr2 and I’m in need of struts but Toyota discontinued sealed struts for my car and that’s what it calls for, so my question is, can I just instal non sealed struts? Or is there anything I need to change? I’m not wanting to covert to coil overs

Do you have sealed-struts currrently on car?
Or rebuildable unit with giant gland-nut on top that can be unscrewed?

Are you looking for performance upgrade or just stock handling?

AS NOTED, THERE ARE AFTERMARKETS THAT ARE SEALED AT THE TOP (AND ARE THROWAWAYS) AND OEM'S THAT HAVE INTERNAL CARTRIDGES THAT CAN BE REPLACED. BOTH TYPES CAN "USUALLY" RECYCLE THE EXISTING SPRINGS.

FOR YEARS I COMPETED WITH FLUID TYPE CARTRIDGES WHICH GAVE VERY STIFF AND SLOW RESPONSE TO THE DEMANDS OF HARSH RACING ACTIONS.

NOW THAT THE CAR IS IN "RETIREMENT" I SWITCHED TO "GAS TYPE" CARTRIDGES WHICH GIVE A MORE CUSHIONED AND OEM RIDE.

BTW I GRABBED A SALE FROM "MONROE" AND GOT ALL 4 CARTRIDGES FOR JUST OVER $100 AND SPRING COMPRESSOR AT HARBOR FREIGHT FOR UNDER $15. I SAVED 100'S AND 100'S OF $'S W MY DIY WORK. SO CAN YOU. :surprise:

Yes, rebuildable strut housings are so convenient as you only have to replace cartridge inside. Even possible to do it on the car and not disconnect strut from spindle so you don't have to get alignment afterwards.

If this isn't regular procedure, you can even rent spring-compressor for free from Autozone.

Since KYB was OEM manufacturer, they are still available from KYB rather than Toyota (same part).

AT $140 X 4 EA THIS WOULD NOT BE THE ECONOMICAL CHOICE FOR ME. THEN AGAIN IF YOU HAVE THOSE "SEALED" UNITS THAT HAVE TO BE THROWN AWAY YOUR BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD SPOT.

JUST AS A REMINDER FOR MK1 OWNERS-THE 85-86 AND THE 87-89 CANNOT BE SWAPPED DUE TO THE DIFFERENCE IN LOWER BOLT ATTACHMENTS. :frown:

I think that's for pair of them, so quite good deal. ;)


Whenever I run across sealed struts that need to be replaced, I convert them into rebuildable units. This lets me use cheaper inserts and opens up a lot more options in variety of cartridges available from basic commuting to all-out racing multi-adjustable units.

First, I cut off tops of sealed struts and remove worn-out guts.


Then I cut off 5cm from old set of rebuildable struts for the threaded tube and gland nut. This particular piece came from a junkyard Volvo. Auto shops will often give you old struts for free, it's going in dumpster anyway. Use pipe-cutter to get nice even square cut.


Test fit your strut-insert and threaded section. May need to cut down strut-housing some more so that insert sticks out above threads ~2-3mm. Then weld threaded section onto your reclaimed sealed struts.


Some clean-up and paint and you've brand-new struts!!!


Now you can choose from much larger list of cartridge options:

- Gabriel/Monroe: basic commuting ~$120/set-4
- KYB: OEM quality and will last long time ~150/set-4
- PAX: basic adjustable unit (rebound)
- KYB AGX: performance adjustable unit (rebound) ~400/set-4
- Tokico Blue: performance unit
- Bilstein B6 Sport: high performance ~$600/set-4
- Tokico Illumina: performance adjustable ~600/set-4
- Koni Sport: performance adjustable (rebound) ~$700/set-4
- Koni Motorsport 8611: high performance adjustable (rebound and compression) ~$1500/set-4
- Ohlins: high performance 4-way adjustable (low/hi-speed rebound, low/hi-speed compression) ~$3000/set-4
- Penske: racing 6-way adjustable (low/hi-speed rebound, low/hi-speed compression, knee-points on both) $12000/set-4
