Wondering if someone can shed some light. When I'm on a decline (and only when) and coming to a stop, a loud grinding sound comes from the front brakes (?). Is this due to something wrong with the downhill decent control? If so I never have used it, or even turned it on. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

NO! That's not normal. Sounds like you need to get them checked out ASAP. The down hill control only works when you turn it on and it only works the rear brakes when it is working.

NJ sounds like a lot of stop-go driving. So if over 30-40k miles and original pads, you're hearing the wear indicators scraping (or metal to metal if you waited too long). Replace pads (<$50 for parts) before it turns in to a $300 job with rotors too. Don't let a shop talk you into turning the rotors unless they are burnt or warped. IMHO Once turned they quickly warp.
