I just found this forum and wanted to let everyone know how much I enjoy reading the threads. I have a 94 Geo Prizm 1.6 A/T car with 104k miles. I have 2 questions for anyone who can offer some assistance. Thanks in advance.

A few months ago my speedo stopped working. It kicks in when I've been driving for a bit or on the interstate. When I'm driving on the interstate, my check engine light comes on also. My odometer continues to work. I took my car to Autozone to check the code, but they said they can't read anything older than a 1996. From some internet research, I figure my vehicle speed sensor needs replacing. I'm not prepared to pay $190-260 to buy a speed sensor, so I'm contemplating going to a salvage yard to see if I can get the part. Here's my question, please don't laugh - I've never gone to a salvage yard before. Am I expected to go out and retrieve the part myself? Or, do I simply arrive and tell them what I'm looking for, they quote a price and then someone gets the part for me?

Can anyone recommend a weatherproofing product that works well and is easy to install? Something a female could handle. The rubber around my front windshield is starting to disappear.

Thanks.

get some electrical cleaner (spray can) and some dielectric grease clean up the plug and the speed sensor put in some dielectric grease i bet it will come back to life and be fine, My GF's 93 did the same thing.

For the weather proofing i dont really have an answer often people use silicon spray to renew rubber parts

Check out Fig. 5. It points roughly to where the vehicle speed sensor is.

Depending on the salvage yard, some are very organized and businesslike and sell parts from behind the counter (they remove). These are generally more expensive. The more fun salvage yards are where you can roam around, find a vehicle, and remove parts yourself. This is usually really cheap. I feel guilty sometimes when I pick up a $200 dealer part for $5.
