87 MR2. I've read the book on this subject but, is it possible to remove the head with the exhaust & intake manifolds in place. Looks like if you remove the fuel rail it would be possible to pull the wiring harness out the way. What do you think?

We concluded the gasket is blown. I've got it stripped down to the head bolts. Still got the manifolds on but they will be easy to remove now if needed. This job is not for the faint hearted. Do you know what tool & size I need for the head bolds? I'm getting showered so I can go to O'reillys to try buy one.

Yes you can get yhe head off with the manifolds attached. Probably not worth the effort but leaving the intake on would probably save time changing the head gasket. Anyway I've got pitting around the front corner of # 4 on the block. That head stud was covered with crap, look like there could be a small 1/4" L shaped crack or mark on that piston in the same area. The exhaust manifold is cracked every which way so I need a new one of those. I'm not having the block skimmed so I may try a thin skim of titanium putty on the pitting and see what happens. Any ideas?
