the rear pinion seal went on my surf and I'm picking up a set of 4.56 to get better milage on the highway, the gears in it now are 4.88's.
does any one have the specs for setting up the diffs?
just for info sake, it has an 8" rear axle, and a 7.5" ifs front with ADD

Specs are in the Factory Service Manual.
Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to change tire size?

Well, you want 7-8 thousandths backlash with a nice centered scuff. Often you can reuse the old shims. Toyota thirds aren't too hard to set up as far as gears go.

If you attempt this make sure you have a press and inch-pound torque wrench. If you already do disregard.

definatly not cheaper to change tire size when i can get bothe gearsets and install kits for $270.
i had to tear into the diff any way to replace the pinion seal, and was wanting to chage the gears out anyway, this just gives me a reason to.

i've got the press and an inch/pound torque wrench, i may have to see if i can borrow one of them dial guages from work, but it shouldn't be a problem.

thanks for the help, i'll let you guys know how it turns out.

One more word of advice, get real V6 gears for the rear third. Often some will sell you 4cyl gears with a spacer. V6 rear gears cost more but are worth it.
