In an effort to improve my gas mileage, I am considering replacing the 4-speed in my '90 2wd pickup with a 5-speed. I have recently located a nice G52 5 speed for $100 which seems like a reasonable price to me. For another $20, I can get the crossmember and driveline if I need them. Anyway, I am curious as to whether or not the 4-speed and 5-speed trucks came with different rear axle ratios. I currently have what I believe is the 8" ring gear and a 3.07 ratio. The axle code is G662.

Second question- Even with the back of the truck empty, the front of the truck sits noticeably higher than the back. I know I could adjust the front down a bit, but sometimes the on-road driving feels more like off-road around here and I regularly drag my rear bumper even when driving slow and taking the humps at an angle. I also know I could install air shocks or bags to lift the rear, but I like the relatively soft ride that it has now. Does anybody make longer spring shackles for this truck? I'd like to bring the back up about two inches I think.

If you truck is a 4x4, I know the lowest gear number was somewhere around 4.10. Maybe lower, but definitely not as low as 3.07. I have never dealt with any two wheel drive vehicles before :( sorry. But on the second one! If you have the "saggy butt" you should either: (a) get new leaf springs (b) get an anti sag kit. Either way works just as good. I'm not sure which one is more expensive because my truck is lifted, so I've never had to buy anything other than lift springs, which weren't too expensive ($390 for both springs and shipping.)

BTW, put your truck, and any info about it in your signature. It really helps people trouble shoot stuff, and it saves you the time of typing it out each time. ;)

Sidney,

Even though I've owned my truck for over 14 years now, I've about tripled my knowledge of it over the past month due to your help and the help of others on this wonderful forum.

Thanks!

the 4:10 is way too big id go up to a 3:58 or the 3:73 if you want torque. you will sacrifice gas mileage. i would trade you flat out for the 3:42 for my 3:73 complete hun to hub. if you meet me half way if wouldnt be a bad drive either since im in north central fl. possibly a weekend trip if your interested i might be able to arrange something. is your truck a 2wd 5 lug?

i havent been inside the "chunk" to see if the gears are removable if so we could swap gears instead and just ship em.

Shackles

Downey Perfomance, iN Calif, makes longer shackles. they have two styles, Standard lift/replacement chackels (I think 3/4 - 1 inch overall lift), and then they have the Rubicon style, (no center brace)which I would not recommend for street only use.

Your springs, like mentiones earlier, ARE the culprit, as they are probably worn and need replacing.

Riv.

gears

I have just bought 93 a 2wd for parts it has the 3.73 rear but someone has swaped the tranny for a 4 speed but I will swap gears I have a spare rear out of a 91 2wd 5 on 4 1/2 or 114.3 if you prefer. while I am at it does anyone need any fuel injection parts I have one complete running 22re and one that does'nt run the one that runs has 182,000 on it . I was going to convert to fuel injection but decided that a carb was less of a problem in the long run. both of my parts trucks are fuel injection.

Hey Radio I just put a 5 speed from an '89 P/U into my '90 originally 4 speed. When I bought the truck it actually had a Celica 5 speed in it. I didn't like it because it seemed the rear end gears were too tall (1st seemed like 2nd etc.). The previous owner told me it was originally a 4 speed. So I found a 5 speed off a '89 2wd P/U and installed. I don't know what my actual rear axle ratio is but it drives pretty well with the 5. Still seems a little tall with the wider ratio truck trans but definitely better than the Celica trans. 5th gear @ 60 mph shows about 2000rpm w/25.5 " diam tires.
