It will not start and rolls backwards down the hill. The starter does not sound right when trying to start it. It sounds like it struggling or not engaging all the way.
I don't have a clue where to start or what to do.

What happens if you put it in 4WD with the engine running? If it still rolls in park it could be transfer case or transmission. If it doesn’t roll it’s probably a rear differential problem. Either way unless you are experienced with differentials, transfer cases and transmissions you’re going to need a shop.

Did all of these issues happened at the same time? What is the mileage and condition of the truck? Starter struggling, like a weak battery?
From the way you are describing the situation, the first thing you need to do is get the truck started. Then see check the transmission, transfer case operation. Maybe then you can check the front and rear diff operation.

The truck was running perfect other than a few days before this happened it felt like the transmission slipped one time in reverse. It was not struggling to start at all. I just put a motor with a little more than 100k miles on it from a donor vehicle and the rest of the drive train has 220k on it. I'm anal about maintaining it and it showed no symptoms.

It all happened at the same time. Now when I try to start it the starter does not sound right like its struggling being overloaded. Unfortunately I don't know much about transmissions or diffs except how to swap them which is what I'll do if I can determine what's bad. The fact that it won't start makes me lean towards the transmission but not sure what tests to run without the truck starting.

The 4wd was working perfectly and transfer case was going in and extremely quite and smooth. I work in some terrain that 4wd is a must of you can't get to the job. Could there be a safety feature from the ecu causing the no start issue because the trans or diff is broken?

Are your transmission and transfer case shifters adjusted properly? Does it move in all gears? Is the starter loose?

The only thing comes to mind for all these to happen at the same time is broken mounts for the drivetrain causing it to move out of alignment.
Generally, even if the transmission, transfer case or differential failed, none of them would affect the starting of the engine!

Have you try moving the shifter to see if the engine would start? Was the truck moving when it happened?

I'm going to go pull the starter, bench test it and look for damage. I will look at the flex plate at the same time to look for damage. I'll post what I find later this evening. The truck is on a friend's property a few miles away so I don't have instant access with all my tools handy to work on it. Thanks for the help so far. I never even considered doing or transfer case.
