I picked up my new 2020 Highlander Hybrid XLE yesterday but the dealer was short handed due to the virus restrictions in MA so basically it was just pick the car up ASAP and be on your way without any instruction. When I got home I tried to set up the Remote Connect but screwed that all up as I loaded the REMOTE app on my phone which would tell me halfway through the set up that it was no longer valid - at least for a 2020 Highlander. It seems that now this should should be done through the TOYOTA app. Anyway in order to sort this all out I called Toyota Customer Service who got it working but managed to screw up my name which can't be corrected - at least by me.

But a few problems:

In order to get get remote start to work I need to lock the doors first with the app. Seems like it forgets whether the doors are locked already and won't update until I lock with the app first.

Does not give me a reading for odometer or gas level. This may have something to do with Service Connect (?). This whole set up is very confusing.

On the communications screen in the car it still shows the Remote Connect Authorization button but when selected and code inserted it says invalid.

This may require more hours on the phone with their techs - could be it will require a whole new set up from scratch.

Mine didn’t work for two days (got some error message when trying to sue the functions) and then magically fixed itself somehow. I also started on the remote app and later switched to the Toyota app.

I couldn't even set up the Remote app. As soon as I entered the VIN it would give an error message saying the app was no longer being used.

Mine got setup with an incorrect phone number. Couldn't correct it in the app. Had to go to toyota.com, select owners, then owners homepage, and signin. There, I was able to correct my phone number. You should be able to correct your name there.

Mine got set up with the wrong phone number as well as my name. I was able to fix the phone number but when I fix my name it just reverts to the incorrect version the next time I log in.

It sounds like something isn't communicating properly, although I seem to recall that there was a delay in getting some of the data to the app. I've noticed that certain things in the app update overnight and appear the next morning. If the problems don't go away by themselves overnight, then I tend to agree that you may need to start from scratch with the Toyota app. If there's a way to remove the car from the Toyota app and then start the process over, I'd do that. You may also need to call them back if you can't get past the activation portion of the process. There does not seem to be a connection between vehicles in the Toyota Owners Web site and vehicles in the Toyota app, so don't worry about removing the car from the Web site if you see it there already. (You may not... mine took a few days after the purchase to magically appear on the Owners Web site. I didn't enter it manually.)

The car came with this manual that attempts to explain the process of setting up the connected services and the app.
You have to do the activation on page 3, and then the Toyota app is on pages 5 and 6.

When you add the car to the app, pay close attention to all of the things it wants to do as far as data sharing is concerned. While there's a giant "OK" button at the bottom of the screen for each step, there's a tiny "Don't Share" option in the upper right corner. You can pick and choose which elements to share.

Before I got the 2020 I downloaded the Remote Connect app, and then learned that it was for older models and changed to the Toyota app. I've had a login for the Toyota Owners Web site for a long time, so I had that part covered. Between those two things (correct app, existing login), I was prepared for the day I brought the 2020 home and set up the Toyota app with the new car. My experience went very smooth and it was working in pretty short order.

I did call this morning and they reset my connected services and it does seem to be working OK now - I'm getting data for the odometer, fuel level and distance to empty. As far as the name change goes I've sent an email to customer service to see if it can be corrected that way.

Yay!
The next thing to play with is your Driver Score. That's something that updates overnight and shows you the previous day's trips.
Mine is terrible. Most of my trips are very short distances, and the number of "infractions" per mile seems to make a huge difference. If I drive in busy traffic, I can rack up three or four infractions in a couple of miles and get a score of 11 (the lowest I've seen), and yet if I rack up the same three or four infractions over 20 or 30 miles, then I can score in the 80's or better.

I made sure to turn off the driver score data sharing for "third-party insurance offers"! Good thing I did, because it's not very flattering and not a good indication of my driving record.

You might as well turn it off completely (if possible) because it's useless. All those 'scoring' systems (auto manufacturer or insurance) use essentially the same algorithms that have nothing to do with your driving but are more times than not a response to traffic around you - G-forces on acceleration, G-forces on braking, and G-forces when turning. The theory being a safe and careful driver will never do any of those quickly or suddenly. Pretty much impossible in any urban or suburban environment.

It has more amusement value than anything else. I don't think you can turn it off completely, although you can remove it from the front page of the app.

NHTSA has published a couple of studies that show a correlation between the frequency of sudden acceleration forces (acceleration, braking, and cornering) and the likelihood of being involved in an accident. I agree that it sounds great on paper but it's impossible to avoid in an urban environment. You're always reacting to what's around you, and sometimes that means stepping on the gas, slamming the brake, or getting your butt around the corner.

If these studies ultimately show that people living in the cities and suburbs are more likely to have accidents than people in a rural area, then that's probably true and even obvious. But measuring those factors on the scale of an individual driver is kind of ridiculous. You'd probably learn just as much about risk from the GPS location of the car.

Can you tell me how to turn off the drivers score data sharing? Can't seem to find on app.

You can address data sharing during the process of adding the car to the app. Or, once the car is already in the app, touch the gray head in the upper right corner of the app to access your profile, and then go into Data Consents.

WHO Did you call?? Phone number please?!
Well that was a year ago so can't recall with certainty.

I believe I called their help line at 800-331-4331 and then they connected me with tech support.

Still never completely solved my name problem. Sometimes it shows up correct and sometimes it doesn't. Never shows up correct at MYTOYOTA on the computer which is probably why it 's never been solved 100% on the app.
