Hey, I just bought an '06 Rav4 and the remote start does something that I hope isn't correct, as I have never had it happen before on any of my other vehicles with remote start.

When I start the car up with the remote start, it works fine, starts right up and doors stay locked (normal), but when I hit the unlock button to get in, it shuts the engine off, and I have to get in and start it up again with the key, which seems completely pointless to me.

I have tried a couple of different things and I can't get it to stay running when I try to get in, even if I don't use the remote to unlock and unlock the door with the key, it shuts the engine off.

Is this how Toyota designed this, or do I have a problem with mine? I have seen this posted here and there on this and other forums, but haven't seen any answers either way.

If it's supposed to be like this, it seems stupid to me!! I mean the car can't go anywhere until the key is in the ignition anyway, so why would they make it shut the engine off when you hit the Unlock button???

Just extra wear and tear on my starter every morning.

Remote start

I installed a factory unit in my Rav and it is the same. This is how they are designed to operate. I know it may not be optimal and the range is short but there has been no hacking of the wiring to install it and I think that is important.

Yeah your right, talked to a Toyota tech, and for whatever reason, that IS how Toyota designed the remote start to work.

Apparently Toyota was late in the game for having factory remote start, so this is one of the first systems they offered ('06), not sure if the newer factory remote starts still do it.

Even the tech I talked to said it made no sense and was stupid, to which I agreed.

It makes no sense to me that it would shut the engine down. The car can't go anywhere until the key is in the ignition and obviously if you have the remote and key to unlock it then you can get in a just re-start it, so I don't even see how shutting the engine down would make it anymore secure.

The only thing this stupid system does is put double wear on my starter motor...Great.

I find the same thing on my 2020 Camry Hybrid. I can start the engine remotely, either via the keyfob or the Toyota app that's in my iPhone. Using the app, the engine will run for 10 minutes. If I go out to the car and get in, the engine shuts off and I have to restart it. From what I'm reading, that's the way Toyota made it. What on earth were they smoking when they came up with this? As mmcpeck so accurately stated, it puts double wear on the starter motor. SMH!
