So I bought a used 2018 SE the other day, and the instrument cluster has this weird haze or something behind it. I was going to try and order a new front glass “if it’s even replaceable” and try to fix that for 40 bucks. Anyone know how to get that out, or even if the glass/plastic is removable?

Toyota TIS would be a good source. Otherwise you just take apart what you gotta take apart.
As in « Start digging into that dash! »

Really, without some insider info from funGabriel (a TSB or something), you could look for a maintenance manual but I would be surprised you’d already find that on the market...

You’re the icebreaker here. Please document the process and post it back to this wonderful community

Just a thought wouldn’t it still be under warranty. Something like a haze definitely didn’t come from you or the prior owner. Just saying I’d check first.

Otherwise YouTube is your friend if there’s anything out there that new...... The only real issue you have with these modern bastards and that goes back the last 35 years is the pry points. Virtually nothing is just screwed together anymore and something usually overlaps and hold something else and you have to know how to get those off which in most cases requires prying up and some hidden tooth in various places to get out what you need to get at.

Once you figure out what to pry and where without breaking it it’s usually pretty self-evident. One word of advice praying and plastic is the cold. Don’t go praying on Cole plastic if you can possibly avoid it. Get out the magic hair dryer and get it nice and warm or there will be tears.
If you do have to do any prying it might be a good time to invest in one of those cheap auto body pry tool sets. You can get them anywhere and all they are is a plastic version of your favorite steel pry tool. My set cost probably eight dollars and I think it has four pieces. You’re very seldom ever use the things but when you have to pry on two plastic things you don’t wanna screw up they do come in handy.

Good idea actually, I think that is still covered under the 36,000 mile warranty. But I’m wondering if they’d replace it, even if it still works and just looks ugly. And yes, sadly it’s already cold over here so that will be an issue. Thanks for the advice!

It's more of a safety issue, right? Most likely they will take pictures or vidoes and send it to Toyota for authorization to do the replacement.

Please report back on the procedure on replacing the instrument panel plastic. My has some scratches on there and would like to replace that piece.
The scratches / watermarks ended up just being on the front of the plastic, so the dealership wouldn’t really take it apart and replace it.
What I ended up doing was buying some scratch remove/polish and just rubbing the heck out of it and all of the issues that appeared went away. It took a while but this seemed to completely remove all the chemical/water damage and scratches.
As far as removing the instrument cluster, I still don’t know how to take it out , but the plastic piece IS separate, so it should be possible

WHY would hazed plastic be covered, and why would a haze " definitely didn’t come from you or the prior owner" ?!?!?

I would bet dollars to donuts someone cleaned the plastic with the wrong kind of cleaner and hazed it,or worse used some sort of abrasive pad.

User error = no warranty

Well if it comes back or otherwise ends up an issue hit a junk yard. There’s lots of these on the road so people will be totaling plenty. I’ve done some wild fixes with that plastic polish. I once dribbled some paint stripper down part of my. cessna windshield. It bubbled right up white froth. With careful sanding and polishing it came right back. The only thing noticeable was a slight distortion which was no big deal.
