Removing upper oil pan

175 Views 7 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Covah161
Picked up a 2004 Camry with a 2.4L engine. Engine was locking up. Trying to drop both oil pans to get to the main bearings. Timing cover, AC compressor, steering pump are all off. I think I have all the bolts holding the upper pan but it is not moving. What is the secret to removing it? Is it just stuck if so what is the best way to get it off. Engine is still in the car although it probably would have been better to pull the engine. Thanks in advance

idk if the oil pump and balance assemblies have to come off first however it does have some badass silicone holding it on

I've removed these with the balance shafts in place so they can stay.

@Covah161 I presume you got the bell housing side bolts as well? Also there is a axle bracket on the back but forget if it's attached to the upper or lower block. If it were me I'd pull the engine if you have the resources. It will be much easier to remove, inspect, and repair anything that is needed. Well worth the efforts in my mind (and my old back thanks me).

Yes I have the bell housing bolts plus the axle shaft bracket bolts. I should have pulled it but watched a you tube that said you could do it with the engine in it and it wasn’t hard. Guess what, he was wrong. Left out a bunch of things. I guess it is just stuck and I can’t get to it to break it loose. Thanks for your help.

After taking the oil filter off is there anything in the oil filter housing that has to come off

Yes there is another bolt in there. You remove the threaded sleeve the filter goes on with a large hex socket I believe, and you'll find another bolt inside there.

Got that out and there was one more on the bell housing coming from the backside hidden by the front mount. Finally got it out. Loosen the mains and it started turning. Gets to a spot where it gets real tight. Getting ready to pull the chain off and see if it’s in there.
