Hi guys

I have just saved some money from my internship and I want to use it towards repainting my Corolla, the color has chipped off.

I went to Maaco to get an estimate, the guy said it would cost $300 for the paint and extra for taking care of the chips (he said he would need to do DEA on the chips, that would cost money) that would cost an additional $800, taking my total to $1,200. But then he saw my moon-roof and said that would cost an extra $100, taking the total to $1300.

He also gave me a cheap quote by saying he would simply sand the car for $250 and get it painted for $300, totaling $550, which is something I can afford. Do you think its a good idea to take this route?

Thanks!

I would recommend getting another quote. My understanding is that the paint that maaco uses isn't designed to last long. +/-3 years.

Obviously do what u can only afford. I used macco long ago so price then n/a today. Did sand/repaint, but "no chip/body work needed". Can only say..sold vehicle less than yr later & paint looked ok. Do ask how they protect vehicle after painting to avoid dust etc getting on uncured paint. Good luck.

Macco is HORRIBLE!!! Do NOT go there!!! Source: I worked at one a decade ago. They do the absolute minimum required to make paint stick to the car. The clear coat is laughable. Everything done there is rush rush rush and no care is taken to make things look good or last. In the end it's up to you but i would shop around.

In general, most businesses have upsale quotas to meet. I am not surprised. You get the $399 paint job. Extras are prep, body repair, and metallic paint and clear coat. Better off going to a body shop. By the time it's all said and done, it costs more than a bodyshop.

Alternatively, you could do a vinyl wrap on the roof. Only issue, the imperfections will show over time if surface isn't prepped.
