I am sure this is a simple one for most of you. My sons 1990 Corolla needs a new automatic transmission. I believe I may have located a decent used one. I have never swapped out a transmission or an engine. How difficult is it to do? I am quite mechanically inclined and extremely patient. Any hints would be appreciated

Thank you

Hey Kevin, I have changed two Corolla transmissions - a manual in a newer (2000ish) Corolla and an automatic in a 92 Corolla. Neither one was too bad of a job. The 92 had some pretty bad engine oil leaks too so I just pulled the transmission and engine together. The 92 is now drip free (definitely worth the extra effort for me). The only real problem that I ran into was the first transmission that I got from the junkyard was the wrong one. Make sure that the replacement you are buying is the correct one. I think that they make a three-speed and four-speed auto. If it weren't for the mix up with the junkyard I would have completed the job in a weekend. Hope everything goes well.

Kevin you still around? How'd it go?
Anyone else with some good advise on this?
I don't need to pull the motor, just swap tranny from a '90 to a '91 this weekend,
Neither car is an overdrive, both with 15 bolt pans.

Oh and that 2nd post above, that doesn't go to the FSM as far as I can tell.

There is no tech section on these forums?
Ain't there any old timers or techs around here that can give me a
quick guide to this?

thanks, Mike

Mike,

You can find a quick rundown on how to do it at the Autozone website under "repair info". It has illustrations and a pretty good set of instructions. The instructions are pretty close but you shouldn't need to do anything with the coolant systems.

I am sure that some of the old timers can probably give you a couple of tips that I don't know about.

Hope that it all goes well.

Huntertn did your 92 automatic have overdrive? I was told id have to remove the engine to replace the tranny on my 90 corolla automatic with overdrive by a local "knows everything" dude. Is that true?

The motor doesn't have to be fully removed, but it will need to be moved over to be out of the way. It's ALOT easier to remove the engine and transmission together, replace the trans, and drop them back in together.
