I been told that I need to replace the rear pads and rotors on my 08 HL Sport. There is approximately 48,000 miles on it. Front brakes do not need replacement.

I've gotten several prices that seem high to me. I'm not one to nickel and dime someone. I just want the job done correctly at a fair price for shop and me.

Anyone have any experience with cost to replace repair pads and rotors? What should the job cost? Anyone have breakdown of cost between pads and rotors? Also, is 48,000 miles "early" to need new rear brakes?

Thanks for the help.

that is very early. I'm at 75k miles and only gone through half of my front pads and 1/3 of my rear pads...having said that I have no idea what brake jobs cost on the HL :ugh3:

Have you ever gotten the fronts replaced? Its very odd the rear's would need replacement before the fronts (under normal wear/tear)

online pricing for OEM toyota brake parts: ~$50 for pads (it says front pads and rear pads, listed as ~$50 for both, I don't know if the $50 includes all the pads necessary for one end of the car or if its a single pad), ~85-90 for a rotor

$640 for front pads/rotors, $198 (I think) for rear pads - all installed.

I replaced the 4 disks and all pads on my 2009 HL Sport with only 40000 Miles.

Pad were 20% left and disks were rusted on the outer edge, about 3/16'' thick. Instead of having them machined, I decided to replace the whole kit.

I chose Raybestos high performance parts and I did the work myself in less than 2 hours.

I bought everything on rockauto.com for about 500$ shipping included.

My rears are also low at 49K.

Went to complete them today and looks like the shop overtightened the lug nuts when they put the summer rims back on. PB blaster and 2 foot breaker bar got me nowhere. :headbang:

Edit: Dealer who swapped my summer tires on loosed tightened them and tightened by hand for free. Rear pads are good 3mm so should be fine for a bit.

48K is EXTREMELY premature for rear brakes. Unless you are very hard on them, like driving very stupidly, something is not right. I get 100K easy on my brakes. Also, why rotors? Did you contune to drive after the brakes were obviously shot and making noise? You should have experienced both squeaky as well as an obvious metal to metal noise /feeling in order to need your rotors replaced. For sure they should be able to turn them, at no cost. Something is not adding up.

Yup, '08 rears squeaked at 62,000. Sort of thought the front would go first and at least half of my driving has been on interstate so no need to hit brakes much out there. I'm guessing that the brake system might be one that contacts the rear wheels first and various owners systems might be doing it to different degrees. Cost at dealer: pad kit, disc brake $149.26, shim kit, anti squeak $10.74, fitting kit $8.59, bush, cylinder slide [email protected]$1.25, labor $172.00, shop supplies $5.16, tax $6.10, Total: $254.35 Can't wait for electric car that can match cost and performance of my HL '08. Got to sit in a $100,000 Tesla, if you get a chance don't miss it. They had a frame with no body on it also,.....amazing.

lol I should own this thread.. my Highlander eats 3 things, gas, brake pads & rotors and tires.. I got my brakes replaced 20k ago and it's getting to the point where if I want to stop I have to pump the brakes.. it's ridiculous. My Civic has 140k on it and still has the original brakes, same with my truck..

Dang, something has to be wrong with the brakes to be replacing them that early and often. I'm at 95k and I have just less than half on the original front pads and around half on the original rear. And with your truck/civic, it doesn't sound like your slamming on the brakes...

AX--that's not normal. There's something up with your brakes, or you live in Colorado and go over the pass every day. Unless the pads are worn down to metal, or the wrong formulation, it wouldn't affect basic brake feel or stopping performance, at least on cool/warm pad stops.

Are the pads being replaced with OEM equivalent formulation?
