Replacement TRD Supercharger-same problem

2494 Views 15 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Jasonoff
Dealer just called me.

New Supercharger installed-same exact two rattle noise on engine shutdown.

Dealer service manager was on the phone with TRD when service advisor called me and they will send a video to TRD.

Looks like I'm going to have the loaner for awhile.:sosad:

damn that sucks man. maybe the issue is bigger than the S/C
yikes, maybe the service rep that took your truck on that initial test run you were talking about may have had a little too much fun with it.
Wow, the more I follow this issue, the less I want a supercharger...

I mentioned that to the service rep and was told it's definitely the SC.
I just called TRD and calmly told them I'm not happy with having my truck lid up for at least two weeks now loaner or not.I also asked if the rumor that the new '09 model unit is having rear bearing issues is true and of course they said no.

Rumor has it that the new '09 unit has a rear bearing problem.
The '05-'08 should be ok.

same, my truck does just fine without one.

Joe, your running the factory intake right?

Yep,I won't dare to go TRD CAI now.

Just because one person might a have a problem turns you away. You know how many s/cer's are out there plenty with not a single problem. I've had mine for 15k miles along with others with more miles.
I really think you and the dealer are getting worried about a noise that every supercharger for our truck makes when its shut off. Its normal.
I had this supercharger for a couple of months and there wasn't any sound with the engine shutoff. If it was from day one, maybe I would believe it's normal.
The rattling sound is nothing like the video you posted. The service dept has installed a number of superchargers in Tacoma's,Scion's and Tundra. They were installing one on a Tundra when I dropped off the truck.I think they would know if a SC is bad or not.
They were the only dealer in my area who would do the install in the book 6 hours because they do many and don't have to refer to the instruction paperwork word for word like the excuse I was getting from other Toyota dealers in my area who wanted 8-10.I even got a 12 hour quote because they don't do many..
Maybe the rear bearing issue rumor on the '09 unit is true .
That really sucks. I hope everything works out for you. And I wish I had money for a S/C

Thanks.
One good thing is you don't need the '09 model.;)
I wonder if anyone here has an '09 with a SC.
Anyone?
Dealer service rep just called me again.
They sent a video and either a field rep from TRD or Toyota is going to the dealer next week.
I called Toyota customer service and got a ref # if I try and get my money back on the unit and install.
The unit has the same last sounds you hear when engine shutoff, two clunks from the SC.
mine did it once today on shutdown. make a two clunk rattle. the first time its done it on my new S/C just got 1000miles on it. the old one did it after i got some miles on it. but today my new one did it. doubt i'll have any problems, but who cares. its UNDER WARRANTY!

True about the warranty,badass.
I've cooled off.I love the SC and don't want my money.Would have been next to impossible to get the money back anyway.
My first SC noise started at about 1K miles too.The replacement SC on first start up.
All agreed that it's definitely not normal.
What scared me was your engine seizing. However I still believe it was from the no oil in the engine and not the SC.
If your SC has that shutdown noise consistantly, bring it in.Get a loaner another one.;)

So this rattle is not only on the 09 model since you have an 08.
