Hello everyone,

So, long story short, I have a 1996 Toyota Camry LE and it came with a VIP RS3000 ECU that sits below the drivers seat. It has since become water damaged. While it still works, several parts are badly burnt and I fear it will eventually melt. I don't care about the security system, but if I remove it, the car won't start. So, I fear I need a new one.
It's pretty easy to remove and connect, but my concern is if I get a new one, it will have to be programmed to my car and I'm not sure how I would go about doing that. They don't make this part new anymore, so I haven't been able to find any help with how to install it, or if it is as simple as plugging it in. Can anyone offer any assistance with this? Thank you.

I believe you can just get the ECU for it. The part number i believe is 08190-00921. I believe the ECU is the for other Toyota that was outfitted with the RS3000 and can be plug and play. The only thing is you will need to reset the ECU and reprogram your keys to the 'new' ECU.

Here's a few bunch of links regarding the RS3000.

I appreciate the reply, but I admit I'm still a bit confused. A lot of these are about adding new remotes, which I'm not looking at right now. You seem to be indicating that if I need to replace the entire ECU and I don't care about connecting remotes to it, I could just buy one and plug it in, no programming needed. Is that correct? I don't mean to be nit-picky, I just want to make sure I get this right since it won't start without the ECU. Let me know if I'm understanding you correctly or if I'm missing something in your links. Thank you.

the reason it wont start is because there is an added harness with the RS3000. it is time consuming to remove but the RS3000 goes between the car ecu and the actual connectors (starter, ignition, etc). remove the added harness and connect factory connectors back and car will start. it is my understanding that the RS3000 could only be installed on cars with factory keyless. therefore if you remove the RS3000 AND harness, youll retain the keyless and get rid of the extra stuff. most of the connections are under the steering wheel IIRC. good luck

I believe if you just got the RS3000 ECU to swap in place of the 'bad' one, it should be fine, but any key fob won't work until you reprogram. If this is not an issue, I think you can simply swap out the RS3000 ECU with a good one. There has been people who had a bad RS3000 ECU where their keyfobs wouldn't work until they replaced it and reprogrammed it from other forums (i..e tacoma/4runner)

No one has tried this yet that I can remember on the forum and this is what I would do If I was stuck in your position. Proceed at your own will on this one.

Yes. If you want to remove the RS3000 completely, you will have to do this as noted above. I'm not sure what needs to be reconnected to where, but there doesn't seem to be a wiring diagram available. I tried asking one of our TN toyota sponsor regarding it and he couldn't find it. I'm actually trying to install a RS3000 alarm in my '98 as I got the wiring harness and ecu for it. Just gotta find where a few handful wires connect to the stock engine harness, but 90% of it is just connectors that plug n play.

Kingdom934 you are right. its a control unit, harness and snap in glass break detector with red led. I installed a remote start on my 2000 camry so I was under the steering column and noticed sharpie marked connectors and some zip type ties. I would assume that these were "checked" connections the dealership made when installing the RS3000 harness. I have nothing under my drivers seat so I think the control unit on mine (RS3200) is behind the dash somewhere. as with most modern cars, the connectors only go one way in one place. Ive searched and read but still have yet to find an actual dealer install manual for these things. I'm afraid its going to come down to just getting in there one of these days when it isn't over 100 and digging in. I know some ppl want these so I'm going to take my time as mine still works and see if I can get a few bucks for it.
