I recently bought a '97 Corolla CE automatic sedan. Changed the engine mounts and timing belt and it looks and drives like a new car, as you would expect.

There are two bulbs out behind the instrument panel, left and right sides. The center bulb behind the speedometer still works. I would hate for that bulb to go out. I'm not a car expert. Just how extensive a job is it to remove the instrument panel trim and get at the bulbs? The mechanic didn't want to charge me the $150 for the labor, but I probably should do it pretty soon.

Also, the bulb in the central transmission shifter box is out. This seemed straightforward so I bought a bulb for $3.49 from the dealer and tried to open it up. I got the ring off, then I pulled out the face plate, revealing a well with a glass dome at the bottom. The bulb is under this glass dome. Does anyone know if it's possible to get this glass off so I can replace the bulb, or am I going to have to remove the whole trim around the shifter? It looks as though I also have to take out the glove compartment to do this.

My Chilton's doesn't have much information on this, just a diagram and some vague text. Thanks for any advice to a newbie!

p.s. sorry if this is doubly posted; I posted once but it seemed to disappear :(

remove 2 screws to cluser. pull cluster out. reach behind the cluster and there's 3 rotary tabs for each bulb. twist, and they come out. replace. put cluster back in. No need to remove glass.
