I have a 98 avalon xls and I got the same problem most people posting about this had and that is the rear deck subwoofer rattles at just nominal volume with any music that has strong bass like jazz or r&b. Its not the rear deck or any loose fittings, its the speaker (8" woofer or subwoofer). It is made by a company called harmon motive. I wan't to replace it, I know its 4 ohm but I have no Idea what the frequency range is for that speaker. Think the company only does oem audio equipment for cars. Unable to find any info on the speaker. Has anyone already replaced the speaker? If so what did you use and how difficult was it to replace. Don't want to add a box in the trunk but I might have too. Any other Ideas are also appreciated thanks.

The speaker rattle could be due to the speaker cone surround that mounts the cone to the frame. The surround may have deteriorated or has separated from the cone or the frame. I've seen this happen before. You can try to have the woofer repaired at a speaker shop or get a used one from the wreckers.

update

Well I fixed the problem with the rattle. I had a cd changer in the trunk that wasn't mounted securely so I removed it. Also replaced the stock sub with a cheapo pyramic 8" subwoofer that I had in another car. Before installing the speaker though I surrounded the trim ring of the speaker with some dynamat type material. That got rid of the rattle. I was actually surprised the material made that much difference. Now I just got to get a nice bassy sub to replace the pyramid and replace the speakers in the rear door panel and I should be okay. Thanks for the advice. Just wanted to let everyone know how I solved it cause I know I'm not the only one. And I really didn't want to put a box in the trunk. trying to keep it pretty stock.
