Rock Chip!

Need help!, should I waste my $ with dealer touch up paint or have the body shop fix it. The chip is about the size of a pencil eraser and its right below the window on the drivers side back door. My truck is silver and this chip jumps out at you:sosad: . Thanks

You can do it. Do you have any experience with wetsand paper and a buffer?

I fixed some chips in my hood. Check my CarDomain. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/832238/9

In my opinion, I would just use the touchup paint. I had a larger chip some time back on my fender, and I debated for a month over justifying the cost of professional repair versus a free can of touchup paint from the dealer. I finally came to reason and decided to touch it up myself and I was very satifisfied. Just keep in mind...more chips will come, they are inevitable and getting each professionaly repaired would be quite expensive to say the least. With care, you can certainly eliminate the chip as an eyesore and make it almost unnoticeable at a couple of feet distance. Then again, there are some detail junkies on here who would probably sell their firstborn for a flawless paint job ;)

WOW That's good info PB's The only thing I am concerned about is that the bottle of touch up paint doesn't have the hardening agent in them so the touch up spot will never cure to its full extent.
But I guess for small areas it's a great idea!!
The chips I repaired are over a year old, and I bet you could never find where they were. The key to a long lasting chip repair is cleaning the area before painting and getting it smooth with the factory paint. It usually takes several layers of paint to get it up to the level of the stock paint. Let it cure for a few days, then wetsand and polish. Good as new.
I wouldn't use touchup paint for anything bigger than a pencil eraser.
it depends on your skills. a lot of the time, touch ups will look touched up. if you have the patience and skills, go for it. i'm about to do a few on my hood because i'm going to put a clear bra on the front end.
See if you can find the repaired chips in this picture. There were 2 of them that were a little smaller than a pencil eraser.
