Truck is a 92, has 194,xxx miles, 5 speed and a 22re motor. When you start it up and idle there is a very loud ticking noise, when you give it gas the tick gets louder and faster. Is this rod knock? What causes this? And should I fix this engine or just find another one to swap it?
Also a seperate problem before the ticking started the truck sometime will not go into first no matter how hard you try. What could be the cause of this?
Thank you for any help you can give.

rod knock isnt usually a tick. I would guess its a valve issue. have you tightened the valves recently? if you have a haynes manual its really easy to do. If the noise is intermitant and comes and goes reguardless of the RPM's then is definently the timing chain (has it been replaced w/in the last 100k miles? For the shifter issue does it happen only when stopped or only when moving or both? If its only for 1st gear then its a common issue (at least I get it), i just give it some gas and it usually shifts right away (maybe the syncronizers arnt lined up or something)

get a hammer and tap it on the side of the engine block, that is what a rod knock sounds like.

Usually valve train noises are described as a tick. It would be prudent to check the valve clearances and inspect the timing chain while you are at it.

as far as the shifting problem, Does it grind when you put it in reverse?

If it grinds in reverse check the clutch hydraulics.

look under the dash to see if the master cylinder is leaking, and inspect the slave cylinder and clutch hose for leaks as well.

if there are no leaks try bleeding the clutch, if that does not help it'll probably need a master cylinder.

Mine had a spun bearing when I got it. The knocking was UNBEARABLE. You wouldn't leave it running if it sounded that bad.

X3 for checking the valve clearance and the timing chain. More specifically, check the timing chain guides to make sure they are intact and check the slack in the chain to see if it is excessive.

Well I had a mechanic look at it. And he believes that I have spun a bearing. Now what is the most cost effective and quickest way to get my truck running again. Thanks

I had this happened on a previous vehicle (non-yota) few years ago and no mechanic want to repair the engine. They all think that bits and pieces of metal have circulated in the engine and be impossible to get them all out. I ended up swapping the engine and sold the darn thing.
