HI, I have a 93 Toyota pickup 22re 2wd- that I’m having some issues with.
(quick overview) it has 73,000 miles on it automatic trans- when i bought it had a very rough idle all the time and would die. I found the valves were not closing(pressure test)out the exhaust- i replaced the head timing -chain- spark plugs- cap and rotor(set timing at 5 deg) - etc for a tune up and all included with a timing chain replacement. It runs much better but now idles rough in gear and dies sometimes- i then changed the tps and oxygen sensor- still better but rough- just so you know what it is doing when I put it in gear/ worse in reverse – the whole truck shakes hood inside the cab it sounds like it is going to shake apart. I started wondering about engine mounts or trans mount- I checked them they look ok and I can’t pry the motor and tell it the mounts are bad so? I did find that the big headed bolt that runs through the center on the trans mount was bent it looks like it had hit a rock or? I bent it straight it seems like it is screwed out to far that’s why it may have got hit??? But, that’s out of my knowledge area. That’s where I am at this point and any help forward would be great. Thanks
P.S should I replace the mounts trans or engine or where to go from here I’m willing to keep replacing as I really like the truck I have not changed the egr and I’m not sure if the guy before me already changed the motor mounts(it was his grandfathers he did not drive it much- that’s why carbon build up was on the valves and I don’t know what he tried to fix on it he just didn’t want it but tried to get it going to sell.

Welcome to TN!

Can you tell what RPM it idles at in gear?

If the trans mount appears to have been bent, I would look into replacing it. And if the motor is really shaking in the truck the mounts could very well be in need of replacement. But with that little mileage it shouldnt be the story..

i've battled this same problem before.

don't freak out.

anyway.

my checklist.

1. check spark plugs and wires, even a loose one makes the whole running at idle go bad. i know.
2. readjust valve lash. easy to do.
3. check for vacuum line leaks.
4. make sure there is NO air leaks PAST the VaneAirFlowMeter (referred as VAFM here).

get those going, and hopefully she smooths up. injector cleaner maybe?

TO V62WD LONGBED, No has shake at idle no matter what (BUT, IN GEAR ITS REALLY BAD- EVEN WORSE IN REVERSE), when I give it gas and it is running down the road it runs fine but, if I stop at a light or any other reason it stumbles some times and will even die at times. Doesn't matter if it’s when I first start it- it does it (Shakes really bad). It won't die out when it first starts up (fast idle) but, when it warms up still shakes like crazy(mostly when stopped OR just idling out the driveway etc) and dies some times as i said. Thanks

Idle adjustment screw on intake set too low? While it is stumbling, back it out 1/2 a turn and see if it helps.

Yup. I think that there is a crack or leak in the intake pipe between teh VAFM and the throttle body. make sure it is tight.

If you guys remember my old intake pipe, it was a total hackjob. it had air leaks and that make it run horribly.

and keep in mind i do have the A43D auto transmission, which i'm sure he has the same.

Also, how's the auto trans fluid?
