I have an 86 Camry that I'm trying to find exhaust pieces for. So far I have the manifold pipe and the cat converter, but I'm really struggling with the resonator section. Does anyone know if this is interchangeable with other cars around the same age?

ou could alternatively just go to an exhaust shop and have them fab up an exhaust pipe and put in a resonator...

Around here its actualyl cheaper to do that than buy pieces and have them shipped here

most "mechanics" wont have one.. all thjey do is remove and install the pre made pipes... I dont think anybody makes premades for the 1st gens anymore....

its really a specialty job and you'll need to find an actual exhaust shop that bends / welds and installs exhausts pipes and can install flanges as well....made from tubular pipes.

That or you'll need to buy sectioned Univeral fit pieces etc and create your own which is not that recommended as it'll liekly be way more time consuming and cost more.

Check Rockauto and eBay. I bought a complete exhaust system for my 95 Previa off of Rockauto; it needed minor modifications to fit properly (extend one pipe section), but otherwise it bolted on and fit each hanger great.

I've seen a lot of exhaust kits on eBay when searching for a manifold for my 95 Corolla, and pretty sure Rockauto has exhaust pieces for it as well. I wouldn't know how well they fit, but it'd at least be a good starting point when taking it to a muffler shop or some other mechanic.

theres not really a lot or much aftermarket support for these cars. Theres none available it seems.

Unless he finds a minty one in the junkyard, OR there miraculously is a NOS one at some dealer, hes going to have to get one fabbed up.

To help you with your question, you need to provide more information. A VIN would be great. Otherwise, the exhaust system differs between a V6 and 4-cylinder model. Sometimes the type of transmission (automatic vs. manual) is at play. A California emissions vehicle is often different than a Federal emissions vehicle regarding exhaust parts. Just saying - if you are seeking specific help, the forum needs specific data on your vehicle.

Only a 4cyl or diesel in other countries for the 86.

No pipes available aftermarket for any of these models it seems

Per EPC, there were 3 different engines available for the USDM Camry: a 2.0L 4-cyl gasoline engine, a 1.8L 4-cyl diesel engine, and a 2.0L 4-cyl diesel engine. All 3 had separate exhaust system components. I haven't researched to verify what aftermarket, or what Toyota, exhaust parts are available - but could provide a parts diagram, if the OP would advise exactly what is being discussed here.

Just to chime in, a long while back I had plans to use a 2nd generation Camry exhaust (from the cat to the muffler) in lieu of a cat delete on my 1st gen but I decided to go another route.

For what it's worth the 2nd gen is a perfect fit in the "dogleg" section going behind the rear wheel, and also sits perfectly in the middle of the car, the hangers even match up, making it a good candidate. It does have two resonators though, which made the decision where to cut a short one. I went right between them.

This geometry should also be the same across all models and engines types, making the diesel/petrol issue not so severe, except for maybe overall pipe diameter. I do believe the 2nd gen is slightly larger in diameter than the 1st, but the flanges should mate easily. If not a muffler shop should can easily weld a flange to accommodate.

Correct, only the 4 cylinders. There was no V6 till the 2nd gen.

I have done the search. No aftermarket. I did a partial Toyota parts search as well. Appears to be....... unobtanium.

I didnt research the diesel. Not worth it as unlikely a diesel and I don't believe those were NA market engines.

I heard about this as well.

I imagine he can easily just get a shop to mandrel bend a nice setup for him though. The mandrel bend could net him a whopping 0.5 hp extra.

I've seen a few - but only at classic Toyota car shows... More rare than seeing an Alltrac Camry in the wild (here in California).

Ive seen a lot of the 2.0. but the 1.8... never.

Gotta remember that these were the days when American cars were still mighty and people shunned Japanese cars.

Hawai iis different though... we always had a ton of japanese cars running around everywhere.

I miss seeing these beasts though. The hatchback especially.

They didn’t so much shun them as the Detroit 3 successfully lobbied to Congress to put pressure on the Japanese to have voluntary import restrictions.

we’d have so more Cressidas, Trucks, V10 Camrys, etc if not for that.

Those self-imposed restrictions led us to MUCH nicer Japanese cars - they couldn't compete on quantity, so they upped quality and price to help make up for it. Lexus, Acura and Infiniti came from that.

I liked my GM 80s cars... and I'm gonna be shunned for saying this... but they were a lot less troublesome than my 2- 2nd gen camrys...... I actually still have 3 of my 80s GM. Basically all trouble free minus the typical maintenance and age issues... and GM ignition module failures...

BUT the camry was sooo much more refined drive / feel wise and the build quality and materials were far superior to anything from the big 3.

Gen 2 / 3 I think were the top of the quality material / build wise... from 4th gen though I think they started going downhill.
