When my '91 4cyl is in park, I can hear the shift lock solenoid switching back and forth randomly, sometimes rapidly. I usually need the shift lock override button to shift out of park, but occasionally it will be unlocked.

Any diagnostic tips? I can't find the shift lock solenoid in any of the circuit schematics in my Haynes manual. Because it's "spasming" instead of stuck, I'm thinking it's a sensor or computer problem rather than the solenoid itself.

The brake lights seem to be operating normally. When the brake is held down, the brake light illuminates steadily but the shifter is still locked.

Thanks for the manual pdf. Seems like the shifter position sensor is another possible culprit.

Any tips on where to find the shifter position sensor? I can't find it in the manual. Sorry for the incompetence

The NSS aka neutral safety switch is on the front of the transmission left side near the battery. Worst case you can remove/disable the entire shift lock assembly 1987-1988 model didn't have it anyway.
