This may be a silly question, but dies the RAV4 have a light under the automatic transmission shifter that illuminates when the headlights are turned on? I noticed that on my RAV4 it is completely dark there (though of course I see the gear indicated on the dash). Just need to know if I need a new light installed or get a relay checked out. Thanks!

Not a bad question, I never noticed until you asked!

For my 2009 base model, indeed, there is a light illuminating the gear selections down at the shifter when headlights are on. Also, it will glow brighter or dimmer using the variable wheel dial (left side of steering wheel) which also controls the brightness of the instrument cluster and the radio display.

So, if your radio light can be adjusted with that adjuster wheel, but not the shifter lights, maybe you're not getting juice down there. Not sure about older models having this light, but my guess is it's the same for at least 2006 on up.

Thanks, everyone! My RAV4 is a 2011, so I guess it should be the same as the 2006. Since we just bought it a few days ago, we will try to make the seller (a Nissan dealer) fix it under warranty. They have a couple of other things to do anyway.

Update: There is definitely a light, as the dealer from which we bought the car fixed it. The light worked Friday night, but then Saturday night it wasn't working. Do you think this is a case of poor installation or a wiring/relay problem?
