About 2 months ago (30k miles), my check engine light came on. I took it to Autozone to get them to run the code. It showed catalytic efficiency problems for bank 1 and 2 (I don't remember the numbers now, but it was for the front 2 cats). Still under warranty, I took it to the dealership (we will call this dealership A) A few hours later, they call me to tell me that they couldn't fix it under warranty because the exhaust system has been tampered with. I am the first and only owner of my truck and the only thing I have done is dumped the exhaust behind the axle.

When I pick up my truck, I ask the service manager what the problem was and he told me that there is one bolt crossthreaded and one bolt missing that secures part of the exhaust system to the transmission and the flange connecting the Y pipe to the rear portion of the exhaust was crossthreaded on both sides causing a slow exhaust leak. I immediately knew what the problem was. About a year ago, at about 12k miles, I had my transmission replaced under warranty. It was a faulty transmission and I blame nobody, but the techs at dealership B were the last to touch my exhaust.

So I take it back to dealership B and tell them the situation. They assure that they will fix the problem. They fixed the leak and fixed the bolts, and I was happy. 15 miles down the road, the check engine light comes back on. The very next day I take it back to dealership B. They keep me there for 3 hours to remove the manifolds and find the problem. Their techs found that 2 of the O2 sensors were showing different amounts of airflow. Simple fix, replace both manifolds. They order 2 new manifolds and tell me to bring the truck back next week.

During the waiting period for the parts, my check engine light turns off. I thought it was no big deal and took it back anyways. They tell me that they are replacing both manifolds and it will be done in a few hours. I get a ride to work and just before I leave work that evening to pick up my truck, they call and tell me that they broke a few studs and they needed to order more. This was a little strange considering that they just had the manifolds off the week before. I get a complimentary rental for one day and I pick up my truck the next day.

This time it was about 30 miles later that the engine light came back on. I take it back to Autozone to run the code and it says bank 1 catalytic converter efficiency problem. Thinking about how they told me both cats were replaced I pop the hood and look for myself. What do you know, they only replaced the drivers side, I was told this was bank 2.

I am really pissed off now. I take it back to dealership B knowing that no other dealership would do warranty work on it. They tell me that they will fix the problem and tell me that they only replaced bank 2 because that was the only one throwing a code.

I leave my truck there and get a ride back to work. I went back to pick up my truck and they tell me everything is fine. As I am driving home I get this horrible shimmy in my steering wheel. I didn't want to take my truck back to dealership B so I get the tires balanced.

On the way to the tire shop, guess what, the check engine light comes back on. I get my tires balanced (which didn't help the problem) and head back to the dealership. On the way I call and talk to the service manager, he told me to bring it in (like I wasn't in the first place) and he will look at it.

When I get there I explain to the manager about the check engine light and the shimmy and that I didn't have it pulling into their service department, but I had it when I left. He said its a tire balance issue. I told him and showed him the receipt of my tire balance about 10 minutes earlier. He said that he would take care of both problems (where have I heard this before?). About an hour later he calls and tells me he needs to order a new cat for bank 1 and he can't give me a rental car because they were out of cars, I would have to bring my truck back in a few days. Hard to beleive Enterprise is out of cars, but I go get my truck anyways.

I drop off my truck again (who's counting?) and they are kissing my ass up and down the property. The manager was there to greet me, and they had my truck moved to the front of the line and showed me how their tire balancer was so much better than the other shop I took it to and had my rental ready in a few minutes, which is normally about a 45 minute process. 2 days later they call and tell me it is ready but there was nothing they could do about the shimmy. I was ready to roll some heads when I got back to the dealership. I talk to one of the service guys that was assigned to my truck and he said that he made a mistake and replaced the wrong cat the first time. I thought that was odd, they told me at first that both needed replacing. He told me that my tires were scalloped and that no amount of balancing would fix the shimmy. I gave up on it and I get in my truck and leave.

On the way home, there was no shimmy. It was back to like it was before. There is just the slight rumble of mud tires and that is all.

I haven't called them back to tell them, but I think they didn't want to admit what they did to cause the shimmy and fixed it claiming that it couldn't be fixed.

I have driven about another 30 miles since then and there is no check engine light and still no shimmy.

Sorry for the long post, but I had to vent to someone. My family is getting tired of hearing about it.

I have decided that if I have the same shimmy or engine code come back, I will talk to corporate. I can't handle that mess again.

Does anyone know how to get in touch with corporate?

Hey man...look at the bright side...the dealership admitted their mistake and got your truck fixed. A lot of dealerships would have been dicks and just blew you off like the first one. At least you found one that is dedicated to fixing your vehicle no matter what.

I've heard of a lot worse and it sounds like they did take care of you.
Aside from the many trips to the dealership, you didn't have to spend any out of pocket money. I doubt corporate will do anything.
As for the "shimmy" that can be caused by a number of things, but at least the problem has gone away.

Well I don't blame dealership A for not doing warranty work. It wasn't a warranty issue.

I did come unglued a little about the shimmy problem, but they still defend themselves by saying they did nothing to cause it. I don't care if they did it or not, at least it was fixed. Although I did spend 40 to get the tires balanced with no help.

And to say they are dedicated would be exaggerating. They just saw that I was pissed and they couldn't blame it on me or my aftermarket stuff.

Sounds like my experience with my Nissan dealer. Glad it worked out for you. The way my Nissan situation worked out was with me trading my Altima in for the Tacoma.

True, but for some folks, like myself, time is money not to mention fuel costs getting back and forth.

You got that right. It is about 20-30 miles extra (depending on the day), and with a clogged cat I was getting about 14 mpg!!! I complained about having to spend time off work and fuel. They asked me what I wanted for compensation. I told them to fix all the problems and make sure its right because I don't want to have to go back.

Pay your kid ten bucks, give him a lawn chair, and a book, or some kind of video game and tell him to watch the mechanic work on the truck. Kids don't learn anything in school anyways.

I don't have kids, I am still in college.

I like to work on my own stuff (atvs, cars, trucks), and I would have done the work if 2 new cats/manifolds didn't cost so much.

Maybe Toyota should set up a program where if your vehicle is under warranty, you can get the parts for free and replace them yourself. Of course a dealership would have to run tests to make sure its necessary.
