I have a 1997 Rav4 with 185k. It seems to be consuming a little oil. I anticipate some engine work. We bought the car, which has been pampered from Day-1 for a song so putting some money in the engine won't be a major disappointment.

Has anyone had a shortblock replaced? If so, did you get one from Toyota or an after market? What has been the results?

This car is a second car that needs to be dependable for hops around town. I'd like to get a few more miles out of it in that the rest of car is clean and solid.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

may be cheaper to just buy a "junkyard" engine from a reputable dismantler, i had to replace my 97 engine a few years back as jiffy lube didn't torque the oil drain plug properly and was noticed too late.
got mine for about $450 complete from brim imports in ohio, it had 45k on it when installed and still runs strong now with almost 150k.
