I'm very interested in purchasing a 2000 Toyota MR2. The only drawback is that it doesn't have cruise control.

I called around and there are electronic shops that will install aftermarket cruise control systems for about $500. Is this a good idea? Are there different types of cruise control systems? Will it hurt my car at all?

Trying to decide in the next day or two if I will buy this car, it all hinges on the cruise! Thanks in advance for any advice or tips!

Best,

mr2be or not to be?

pretty much any time i hop on the highway i use cruise. i like to chill out. it's particularly nice on long trips, i get leg cramps sometimes having to hold the [email protected]#$ing accelerator pedal in one place for the whole distance.

but that's not the point. i have read on some forums about different types of cruise control systems. i want to make sure that aftermarket systems won't mess up the engine or other working parts.

i change my oil and filter, but that's pretty much the extent of my mechanical ability with my vehicles. i don't think i'm about to go drilling and messing around with my new car. i'd rather just pay someone to do it right.

My car comes with cruise control.. I found that A: I only use it when I do long trips that actually require more than 2hrs driving. B: its useless when you commute daily.

My opinion.. don't bother installing it unless you do loooooong trips.

I have it on my current car and use it ALL the time when I hope on the highway. I definitely value it, that's why I want it for my new car.

Back to the question, anyone know what are the different types of aftermarket cruise control systems, how they work, is one type of system "better" for my car than another?

To clarify, I'm looking at a 2000 MR2 Spyder, not sure if I mentioned that already.

damn, that's the dumbest reason for buying/not buying a car that I've ever heard....no offense....

and it's just plain dangerous/annoying if you just put on your cruise control EVERYTIME you go on the highway

either you're one of those ppl who flit in and out doing 160 ALL the time, or you're one of those ppl doing 120 ALL the time in the middle lane and never speed up or slow down

either way, cruise control is only for long distances and only for relieving you of some stress until you've taken a break and resumed taking full control of your own car

um, no, you're pretty incorrect on all counts. i tend to go about 5-10 miles over the speed limit, which is usually the speed of traffic on the right hand lane. i just grin and laugh as the stupid hyper people go speeding by.

what's with calling my reasons stupid? please, get a life. i could diss on the cheap ass car in your photo but i won't. oh wait, too late.

later tough guy. enjoy "taking full control of your own car". i guess you're a REAL MAN.

take your unhelpful, subjective, and incorrect comments and shove 'em somewhere, please, just anywhere but here.

*shrugs* i think i've used cruise once since i got the car...and that was going from baltimore to BOSTON. i used to trek to northern NJ frequently, and i still wouldn't use it...and that's a good 4 hour trip. never used it going to Ohio, either.

never had it on the old corolla, and never got used to it...i see it as laziness.

and i have a messed up right leg...that cramps up anyway.

that's a great idea re. the wreckers. cruise wasn't offered for the 2000 model year. it didn't start until 2002, but i believe the models are identical. maybe i should call toyota and find out. that could be a nice option.

thanks for taking a shot at my car since you're "thinking" about getting an mr2 which would be better then my car

and it doesn't help that you're one of those ppl who drive w/ their cruise control which increases the possiblity of accidents

just cuz you tap the brakes to turn off your cruise, doesn't mean that your car slows down right away it's all fun and games until you rear end somebody

unless you have an electronic throttle, then I guess so

The new 2's are not that great. Buy an old one.... they come with cruise control ;). So do certain models of the Geo Metro.... they even make a Spyder if that raises your pants.

:fruit:

PS.. If you're new... you probably shouldn't flame someone with 2000+ posts.... just doesn't make sense.
