Check oil dipstick for 'milky' substance in oil. Loss of coolant with no signs of leaks and white smoke from exhaust even after engine is warmed up. Starting with engine cold you can remove radiator cap then after engine warms so coolant is flowing you can look for signs of oil (a shimmering film in the coolant). Best way is probably to do a compression check on the cylinders, however the above methods can give you a fairly decent indication.
