Single or Double DIN

2261 Views 15 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  mjonags32
I have decided to replace my stock radio in my 2008 Tacoma. I am still exploring my options. I believe that Scosche makes the best dash kit but I am debating on a Single or Double DIN. The main reason for my upgrade is to hook up an ipod. I would also like to be able to play m3p disks. I understand that I can get a single DIN model for around 100 bucks. The only reason I am considering a Double DIN is if it will Play DVD’s. I take lots of road trips and a DVD player would be nice. I have looked around at the Double DIN DVD players and there are several around 500 bucks two that stick out are:

Kenwood DDX6019

Clarion MAX675VD

Not sure what I should do?

should I put me left shoe on first in the morning or the right?

Seriously Get what you want dude. I got the double din beacuse I liked the way to filled the huge hole the OEM came out of. That was my reason. :burnout:
If you have steering wheel controls, the Eclipse head units will work with those controls. The decision between single and double din is all up to what you need. I didn't get a double din because I don't get lost, and never watch DVDs. But now I want one because I get a mad deal....
You have a point but I am not going to spend more money on it just because it fills the space. I want it to play movies but I am only willing to pay so much. Which model do you have and does it play burnt DVD's?
got a single DIN with the scosche adaptor here. looks like a factory install. don't have the DVD player,YET,but am going to swap out soon..mp3 CDs only hold so much and i'm not coordinated enough to hotswap and stay in my lane at the same time, heh. got a poineer deh-3900MP currently.

Most should play burned DVDs there are so SO many variables here such as formats ect.. I did not spend more beacuase it filled the space  There was a huge post a while back. I cant remember the title. but there was tons of "headunit" pics.

I have a basic MP3/wma Kenwood. Maybe thats why. I dont want my truck busted into.
i wish i could find that thread.....

thanks for all the imput. I am reading that some of the DVD Players will not play movies while the car is in motion? is this true and if so is there a way to bypass it?

I'm pretty certain all units can be bypassed...

Pioneer instructions/forum on bypassing are here (also talks about some other brands as well):

Sounds like the DVD Player may be more trouble than it’s worth. I currently travel with a 17" laptop and watching movies on it is fine only the volume is quite low. I wonder if I could plug it into the aux input on some of the single din cd players?

Also I was just told by a tech at onlinecarstero.com that many of the 07 and 08 cars diagnosis systems are linked through the radios. He said that if not installed properly it would cost hundreds of dollars in damage. Not sure if he was full of it. But thought I would ask. Has anyone installed an aftermarket radio on a 2008 taco?
Were you able to use the steering wheel controls with this unit? If so, what additional hardware did you have to buy? Thanks! Nice install!

if u get an eclipse HU, they plug and play into the original harnesses. no chance of doing that incorrectly because there's no splicing there, no adapters, extra harnesses, etc. the ONLY wires you have to splice into are the reverse wire (which is under the driver side kick panel) and the VSS wire (behind the glove compartment). there's actually a really good thread with pictures of which wires and where to splice into. the last wire u have to deal with is the parking break wire. i just grounded it so that the DVD player bypasses while u are driving.
