So I searched and searched and went through about 15 pages and didn't find anything similar to what is occuring to my truck.

I recently just bought my truck for winter driving so I could store my Accord. The truck is a base model automatic 95 Toyota pickup hilux 2wd.

When I first bought the truck, it really had sloppy steering. I could turn my steering wheel 1/4 right before it catches to turn or move the truck, but if the steering is sitting as it should, turning left was no problem. The truck would swerve back and forth. In order to go striaght, I had to keep turning the steering wheel left and right. If a gust of wind hit the truck, I would almost loose control.

I googled the problem and found it on another forum. A guy was having the same problem. There was a box in front where you would loosen a nut and tighten a screw.

I did that and the steering has gotten a little better but there was still play in the steering wheel. But I could still turn the steering wheel 1/3 to the right before the truck would still catch. The truck still swerves and but has gotten to where I can control it more. I don't know how safe this truck would be when there is actually snow on the ground.

Switching lane is also hard. Its not a steady switch over. Its as you almost jerk your truck right into the lane your switching in.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Most likely worn parts on the steering idler arm, relay rod, and/or TRE's.

I'll check on those parts. The truck does have 130k miles on it. Probably time to change those parts.

What about the free play in the steering wheel? will those parts possibly fix the problem?

Play anywhere in the steering system will show up as crappy steering and free play at the steering wheel. Work your way from the outside in, checking the ball joints, then the steering tie rod ends, then the idler arm, and finally the steering box. I would hazard a guess that it is NOT the steering box, and that the adjustment you made could actually damage the guts of the steering box.

So I should change the little screw back to where it was originally or leave it as is. Once I screwed that in, the steering actually got better but not to the point where it was fixed and really driveable.

I would do as ugly and fourwd1 recommend. If you look at the bushings on all the parts he listed you will find that there are some worn/damaged bushings causing the slop. I need to replace a few steering parts/bushings on my 91' 2WD and am also going to replace the steering stabilizer shock (192,000 miles).

Don't know about the steering box though.

Thanks guys. Going on a little vacay tomorrow so most likeyly I'll get everything fixed by Tuesday. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Usually there is a delete button under thread tool, but its not there. All the other forums had them but I couldn't find one on this forum.

Is there a way to delete it here, If so how do I do it.

Thought I would post a thanks for the great info and links. My steering also has some slop to it and I am going to take a look at the idler arm for a rebuild.

Sorry, I should of had an update. After all the great help from members like you guys. It was the idler arm. The nut was loose on it.

If you jacked up the car and move the tires, you could tell that there was free play in one of the bushings. I tighten that up and the truck drives wonderfully now.

Very cool. So you didn't even do the rebuild? I ordered the bushings and will be installing them when they get in.

My bushings on them were fine, but I called a local shop and they recommend that it just be replaced.

Yes. It could be, and that's a good place to start. It could be other stuff instead/in addition to the idler. Have someone wiggle the wheel while you look at the pitman. If the pitman doesn't move, it's a worn gearbox, if the pitman moves but wheels don't, it's linkage.
