I have a 98 tacoma 4x4 w/ a 2.7 liter that takes an extremely long time to start, sometimes to the point of killing the battery. Usually 5 minutes or so. Sometimes if I turn on the ignition and wait about 1-2 minutes it starts quickly, but this doesn't always work. sometimes when i hook jumper cables to it it will start right away, but this also doesn't always work. The battery is good, and it's got new plugs wires, amd a new fuel filter. I don't know if it makes any difference or not, but this started shortly after I drove through some water that was deep enough to get into the cab. Any hints or suggestiopns would be greatly appreciated. No codes on scanner.

Thanks for the advice, but it turns over great, I've checked the battery and it is fine. it and the starter will turn it over normally for at least five minutes before it starts to die. It is just not starting. Once it does start it runs fine, save for a slight miss every now and then.

when you are cranking and cranking do you smell raw fuel at the tailpipe? if you don't you have a fuel problem.

are you getting spark when you crank, pull a wire and hold the tip close to ground, you should get a good arc.

once you know fuel or spark that will help narrow things down.

Thanks, I'll check for the fuel smell first, since i don't recall smelling any raw fuel, then I'll try checking the spark, and then try the plugs. Please keep looking at this thread so I can let you know if any of this has any results
