I am looking at doing a speaker upgrade on my 06 D/C JBL. I am not going to change the head unit or amp. I want to use the stock sub location as well. What are some good speakers to look at? My understanding is the stock JBL sub is an 8" so my plan is to stick with that size. Probably do 6.5" components up front. Should I do coax/triax in the rear doors? I have used Infinity Kappa's in the past and thought they sounded fine. Obviously my stereo/audio knowledge is very limited so any advice would be appreciated.

If you're workin' with a budget of around 200 you can go with the Alpine SPX-177R. It's actually Alpine's top of the line.. I'm rockin' 'em right now (on the suggestion of cam2Xrunner) and they're great. They lack mid-range at first, but give em a week or so and they loosen up and sound great. Just make sure you amp them tho.

Thanks Drummer. Not really worried too much about the budget. More worried about getting a little better sound out of the stock JBL system. I know most auto manufactures skimp bad on the speakers. My thought is that adding aftermarket speakers will give me a little better clarity. I don't want to add any amps.

It's not worth upgrading. I upgraded to Alpine Type-R coaxials and it sounded like crap. My stock speakers produced more bass. Adjust your factory radio. Lower your bass and increase your treble. You should be fine.

I had the Type-Rs running of my Alpine deck and they sounded like shit. If you are not going to amp them, don't get new speaks. The JBL should sound a little better than the regular stereo. You will also need speaker adapters which will cost you some extra $$$. I want to kill myself for changing my speakers. You have to very careful taking off the doors. They scratch up like a motherfucker. Toyota plastic blows. Luckily I have only tiny scratches that can not be noticed by others, only me.

Save your money. That's just my .02.
