Lets' keep in mind here that we can't all be experts or even know the very basics about everything. We all had different exposure to different things as we were growing up. Some of us probably couldn't start a fire with a blowtorch, much less a single match but sometimes what we take for granted comes along and smacks us in the face when we least expect it.
Here are two events I'll share but slight modifications to protect people who hopefully just have other areas of expertise:
I had a classmate who read lots of stories where the hero pours whisky or vodka in the gas tank to coax a few more miles out of the getaway car. My classmate didn't realize soda wouldn't work just as well.
More recently, I met a girl in a parking lot with the hood up on her car. She was diligently using a battery terminal wire brush on the battery terminals...the outside of the terminal. I asked if I could help and she gratefully handed me the terminal brush. Being impressed she had the right tool and grasping the opportunity to further educate her, I explained, while removing the terminal from the battery, that one must use the brush on the contact surfaces. I replaced the terminal cable and asked her to try to start the car again. She turned the key, the starter whirred to life and the car turned over quite lively but didn't start. Long story short, that's exactly what the car had been doing all along, even before I arrived to help. I'm still wondering how to re-set my basic expectations of mechanical knowledge from the general public.
So, share your speechless moments but be nice. Try not to demean anyone or you will feel even worse when you stumble upon a topic you are clueless about :>)
