I have a 86 pick up 2 wheel drive auto transmission and I have been looking for my starter relay. It is not on the finder well ??? Sometimes when I turn the key I get a click and engine will not turn over. I heard that 86 Toyota P/U auto transmission do not have a starter relay. Is this true and if it is what making the click sound. Their is a relay switch (that says relay on it) in the fuse box on the finder well but my manual says it is for the radiator fan. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Woody6

In my limited experience, 83 pickup, a clicking noise from the starter and the engine not turning over can be caused by a malfunction in the solenoid.

I don’t know anything about a starter relay, but if you have a solenoid, a possible repair would be replacing the contacts in the solenoid if they look bad.

I bought some from Sherco-auto.com years ago, the guy there was helpful.

Only one of mine was in bad condition, kind of burned away, maybe from arcing.

Still, I got several years use out of the damaged contact by modifying it so as to use the other leg of the L shaped contact to conduct power to the starter motor.

I installed the new contacts only when I pulled the starter again, for other reasons.

Sherco also, at the time, sold the plunger for the solenoid.

Other things to check would be your battery and ignition switch.

You might search the internet for your condition.

I've check the the switch and battery and wire connections all good. Yep I agree with you on the solenoid. It is connected to the starter so I went on eBay and picked one up for $70 (rebuilt of course). going to swap it out as soon as we get some nice weather. Hope I don't get stranded be for then. Come on Kama 😁
Thank you both for your help :)

I have an 86 Supra ...
NOT a truck, but there is a dinky relay in the front passenger kick panel that is the "starter relay". it is a puny plug in relay but even after all these years the relay looks like brand new.

I would bet money you DO have some sort of a starter relay in the vehicle ...
some place ...
as otherwise the fairly massive amount of current required to pull in the bendix on the starter would have to go thru the ignition switch...

IMHO it's unlikely that Toyota designed it like that...

I'm chasing a very intermittent no-start issue on my Supra MkIII and am struggling... sight.........

My 86 22RE SR5 X-cab 5-speed has a relay on the passenger fender. I had an intermmitent starting issue. It was easy to open the tabs holding the metal cover on to access the contact points inside. After 34 years of daily driving the contacts were semi-pitted and tarnished. Medium sand paper and electronic cleaner spray cleaned them up. Starts 1sk crank within seconds.

I have cleaned them and the plunger contact surface with fine sand paper and electronic cleaner spray. Works great if no overly pitted.
One of the contacts was wore to a nub, it was defiantly the problem. No contact with upper plate although I did clean upper plate it had some grimy deposits.

i have an ,87 pickup base model 2wd automatic with a carb. it did not come with a stock starter relay. i had symptoms identical to what you described. my son and i fixed it with about $35 worth of parts and the following instructions from LC Engineering in lake Havasu, AZ, a great resource BTW. it took about 90 minutes. Starts every time now with no issues after years of headaches.

hope this helps.
