Probably the rack is leaking into the boots, where it's slowing weeping out. It's a fairly common problem.

Thx BMR, so is it an easy fix or do i need to replace the rack? Funny thing is i just had the power steering fluid replaced and was looked at from underneath and was not told of any problems, typical machanix!:facepalm:

It's a pretty big job. Here's a DIY for the Avy you can read thru to see if you're up to it.

I got quoted $1400 to replace the rack, which is an ok price for parts and labor. But..... I can buy a lot of transmission fluid/ aka power steering fluid for much less than that! And I've read such seepage is quite common on higher-mileage cars. So.... my '97 Avalon is getting a sip of Dexron II once every two months or so. Only have about 120k on it.
