Does anyone know right off hand if a 4x6 speaker will fit in the front normal 4" speaker mounting location and the mounting holes line up?
I was looking in there yesterday and it seems to me one would fit, but I don't have one to test it with before I order on line.

I know 4s are not much help, but I am looking for a temp replacement till I put in my real system in a few months.

TIA

Pete

iirc, you will need to do a lot of relocation and modification of the lower panels and surrounding wire harnesses and brackets. I think 4.5" was the biggest I could "mod-fit" into those areas, especially the driver side.

ut oh...
it was the pass side I had off yesterday and it seemed to have lots of room and had mounting pegs down towards the bottom and a few up above the ones for the 4"...
Which, is why it seemed a 4x6 should fit..
I have not even pulled the driver side yet... I bet it's too late to kill my order too...
See boys and girls.. that is what being "impatient" gets you...
30.00 wasted lol
I'll still give it a shot ha..
Tnks for the info rivethed :)

Why not put some speakers into the doors? I'm gonna do mine this weekend, the stock speaker locations are ridiculously crummy.
The speakers that are in the truck now are completely dry rotted and I am amazed that they even work, but as soon as you start to turn up the volume above whisper, they pop and crack badly..
I am looking for a short gap fix to have something to listen to the stock deck with till I get my system complete I am going to install..

I am not sure if I will go the door speaker route..
I have a alpine component set 6.5 2 way with separate tweets I really want to put the 2 ways in the side compartments like this member did

if I can figure it how to make it work.

Then a amp-ed base tube and maybe some quality 4's in the stock location, then if I am not getting enough up front... I may add some 6.5s in the door.

Oh, you have the X-cab. Yeah, my stock speakers are just like yours: above 20% volume and they're basically unlistenable. But I have a single cab. With as little space as I have to work with, I think 6.5s in the doors and an aftermarket deck is the best option. I've got both on my kitchen table just waiting for a Saturday.

Later, if I find a suitcase full of money, an amp can go under the seat and I think a bass tube might fit in the back, or between two bucket seats if I can ever find any. :D

This is actually a typical Xtra cab setup. I ran infinity 6.5 2ways, in modified stock mounts, (with baffles) in the rear sides. I then tried some rockford fosgate 4" in the dash locations. (my recommendation, stay away from these, the are junk). Then for some punch, I added a 2nd generation Infinity BassLink (10" servo-controlled subwoofer), mounted to the floor behind my seat. Decent sound, not alot of wires running around, and can still haul a 3rd body (or 2 small ones) in the passenger side jump seat.

If I had to redo it al over again, I would forgo 4" dash speaker, and adapt/customized the door panels for some nice 6.5" down where the cubby pockets are, and some decent tweets up higher.

That is the type of info was looking for! Thank you..
Can you give me some info how what to use to mount the 6.5s 2 ways in the side storage panels. I have some nice alpine tweeters I thought about mounting in the middle of the pillars, flush mount. My concern is the distance between the sub and 2way in the back and the tweet way up front.. which is why I thought the 4 in the stock location may add some fill... then if I have to cut the door panels, well then I do...

Any and all experience and info is appreciated. I have had some nice rides and above adv stereo setups.. but with more balanced speaker location so I am winging it a bit lol.

3 schools of thought.

Some blow away completely the stock mounting box and the cover/grill, and male a custom cover that fits into the opening. A bit flimsy/vibration prone for my taste.

So retain the stock grill/cover, and create a custom enclosure to fit in side the side panel.

I personally, kept the grill for stock appearance. I used the front part of the original enclosure, to mount my 2-ways (some hot-knife modding required). I also used to 1/8" particle board fro stability of the new mounting. I then used the original mounting hard ware. NOTE: since it became a free air setup, instead of a tuned box like to originals. I used baffles on the rear, to provide some snap/resistance to the cones. Some poly fiber deal-e-o that covers the coil cage backside. (something like these)

If I could ever find the time and motivation, i would take pics. but have not in the last 8 years since I did the mod.

Thanks for that link! I can use something like that for sure..
As for covers..... well, I don't have speakers in the back in that area... I have two storage compartments on the sides and 2 in the floor.. on the back wall about the same height as the storage I have small grills in the corner right at the seats looks from eyeballing the grills, I'd say they maybe 4's like the front would fit there.. NOT what I want to do lol.

Well the Pyramid 4680GX 4x6s came in today..
I pulled the pass side and due to the many hole it was easy finding 2 that aligned up..
then I pulled the drivers side.... ut oh... only 2 mounting hold period! the pass side has 4 or so extra: drivers side was much more work to get to fit... a little tweaking and I put the dash back.

I have to say, I was surprised at how good they sounded... they will hold nicely till I put in a real system.
