Sorry to post another BFG thread :D

I've got a stock double cab 4x4 SR5 except for the BFG ATs which are 265/75/r16. The ride at 60+mph is significantly worse than the Dunflops. On smooth highway the truck seems to shake somewhat though there's very little steering wheel shimmy. Discount Tire was unwilling to road force balance them unless I gave them $5 a tire.

1. For stock wheels do I need to tell them to use the lugcentric adaptors even though the stock wheels are hubcentric?

2. If I get the road force balance that will indicate if the tire has problems such as out of round, etc. ?

3. Is the stock suspension just too compliant for stiffer, heavier tires and I'll need to swap out springs/shocks?

Thanks!

This sounds like a balancing issue to me. While the BFG AT's are D rated and will be rougher than the Dunlops, you should only notice that when going over bumps and such. What I mean is that thereshould be no shake and no steering wheel shimmy on a smooth highway. A little more road noise? Yes.
I am going through the same right now (look for my other thread about this). I had the shimmy also, but that is completely gone after several re-balance attempts. I still have a minor vibe from the left rear wheel, but it's day and night compared to 10 days ago or so. All of that after several new (replaced)tires and who knows how many balancings.

I will get a replacement this week for the problem wheel and I hope that this will finally get me back to the smooth ride I am looking for!

lug centric vs. hub centric?
I don't know, but in my case both were done multiple times. I can't say that the lug centric balance produced better results. The last balance on my rear wheels was done hub centric, and it's the best so far.

How much weight did they have to put on your wheels? The road force is not bullet proof either. In my case, it flagged one wheel with a very heavy spot, and suggested rotating the tire 150 or so degrees on the rim. That resulted in less of a heavy spot, but still 40lbs (while all others were at 10lbs). The road force machine considered that 40lbs acceptable, and the store did not replace the tire. I had to go back to a different store, which then ended up replacing tire and wheel. So YMMV a lot with this.

And they should do the road force balance for free if they have the machine and otherwise can't balance your tires!

Well, I think they're gonna make me pitch a bitch for the free road force balance. Did they give you a printout of the results? I'll have to check on the weights...I know they put some on the inside and some on the outside but it didn't seem excessive.

when i originally mounted my bfg at 265/75/16's i had a shimmy, but they reballanced it and it rides really smooth now. they had to mount weights on the outside edge of the rim. they originally didnt want to put weights on the outside because it looked ugly. the vibes was so bad that i didnt care.

1 good luck finding an answer on this one. searched the haystack for the proverbial needle, then posed the same question - never got an answer. good info for an faq.

2 if the hunter website is correct, yes.

3 it was in my case. trd shocks improved the ride significantly. but, i am running a c rated michelin 265/75/16. not sure about yours.

Just pay the 20 frikkin bucks then everything will be ok.
The road force balancing did not help me at all with the same issue.

Let your wheels and suspension break in first... and if that doesnt work do what my boss always tell me.....''DEAL WITH IT''...
And you are suggesting to just throw the towel and vibrate down the highway? :whatthe:
