can anyone tell me what tranny I have by VIN? I can provide it if necessary because my truck has some weird quirks (gotta love Guam). but just in case, you know ahead of time. 1989 22r 4 speed single cab short bed.

Can anyone give me the rundown on trannies? I've been tinkering with the idea of swapping clutches/maybe flywheels, or bell housings/input shafts whatever necessary to get a Getrag 6spd from the supras to fit. Basically my thought is to swap for a strong 22RET that I've been putting parts together for, make the rear end painfully small--like 2.89's or something--and make the motor GRUNT on the low end to get off the line. Basically, I'm trying to get a respectable mileage out of the application that isn't shamefully slow.

But what do you think would makegood mileage and still be strong enough for 200-250 bwhp driven daily?

The tranny code is in the bottom left on the tag on the door jamb.
I could tell you if you had a 4WD but it looks like you're 2WD.
Should be a code like Gxx or Wxx.

The strongest tranny would probably be that for a 22-RTE, a R151F for 4WD, don't know the 2WD equiv.

fourwd1, is there a way I can add the 2wd tailhousing to the r151f?

AFAIK, no, they're not that interchangeable.
But isn't there a 2WD equivalent?

I dunno. I, personally, have never seen a 22RET on a 2wd drivetrain.
I can get info on gear sizes and etc for 2wd trannies, but can't find any information/don't know enough to determine which would be stronger in putting up with higher torque/spirited driving.

My expertise is with the 4WD trucks/4Runners.
BUT, if there are any parallels here, I did swap the G52 trans in my 84 22R equipped 4WD 4Runner for a W56 trans from a 92 4WD 22RE equipped truck.

So I would think the same sort of thing would work on 2WD trucks, even easier as there's no t-case in involved.

anything special involved in that swap that would pertain to 2wd.. as in bellhousing, transmission length? thanks fourwd1

The Toyota W56 tranny seems to be the best tranny (made by Aisin) for the 4wd versions of 1985-95 Toyota 4-Runners and pickups equipped with MANUAL LOCKING HUBS (or free wheeling hubs),for more info on which tranny you have see links below also for what trannies are available:

I put a W58 in my truck. It came from an early 90s supra and I had to switch over the bell housing from my W55 as well as the shifter housing and the piece that goes inside of it which reqired pulling the tail housing of.

The R series from the later supra non-turbos is even stronger but you would have to get a bell housing, and probably customize the driveshaft.

There is no bellhousing availble to fit the Getrag to the 22R that I am aware of but if you have the dough, I'm sure someone could make an adapter.

^^Vicoor, can you give me a more detailed write up. I.E. explaining what you did after taking the tail housing off and what "thing" inside you had to switch over?

Unless it's simple enough that you think I could figure it out from looking at it?

^ If you find a 5 speed from an RA-series Celica (22R powered), it should be the W58 that bolts right in without any mods (check the VIN tag). That is, unless you use the later Supra version like Vicoor did.

any real difference in strength? I care little where it comes from or year, just strength and gear ratios.

It looks as if the W58's are the same.

Ratios: W58 -3.768 3.285 1.894 1.275 1 0.783

Weight: 35kg

Max stock hp used: 230
found in: 82-98 Supra (5M-GE, 7M-GE, 2JZ-GE), 86 Supra/Soarer/Cressida (1G-GTE), 82-85 Celica (US 22R-*)

from research I've done it seems that the early W58s are not as strong as the later ones.

at some point around '90 the started making the bearing plates out of steel as opposed to aluminum on the earlier ones, and the bearings are supposed to be stonger. I have looked up the bearings and they are not the same, but I don't have any direct info from Toyota regarding this matter.

If you are looking for a much stronger trans, the R series is alot beefier, But they are also much more expensive.
