I have a 1994 Toyota Tercel 4-door DX. Some time ago the exhaust began getting loud, and over time, it of course got louder, and began "belching". I finally came up with the money to take it to the muffler shop yesterday, and was told that the exhaust system itself is fine; however, one of the studs holding the manifold and exhaust pipe was gone (easily replaced), and the other stud is stripped, won't tighten or loosen. The muffler shop was unwilling to address this matter, so I have an appointment with my regular mechanic tomorrow. He thinks he may have to remove the manifold in order to bore the stud out and replace it. This seems like an awful lot of work to me. Does anyone know (a) how much labor time would go into such an endeavor and/or (b) of any other options?
