no question is a stupid question, unless of course you ask the same one twice:p

there is no oil fill plug or outlet. you have to pull the transmission dipstick out and fill with a narrow long neck funnel. same if youre adding any fluid.

a word about the oil additives: they're usually snake oil and some can even cause damage. is there any reason you're adding this stuff? if its just a little rough on shifting i've found that the A340E in the mx83 cressidas responds very well to a fluid flush.

heres a little test on oil additives: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/images/lucas/lucas.htm

I'd say the same applies to the older A43DE in the MX73s, when I had slippage a fluid flush made the transmission seem brand new.

Thanks for replying. i'm adding lucas oil because my car wont shift to second gear when cold. I have to wait 10 mins. Just read in previous blogs that adding lucas to transmission fixes the problem. If this doesn't help, i'll get the transmission flushed.

i would highly recommend that you try a fluid flush first, these oil additives arent much more than snake oil. temporary band-aid fixes at best. plus you can run a chance of causing some serious damage. i'd try using toyota T-IV fluid (it works even though its not spec'd to, supposedly better than dex-3) and failing that use the specified dexron 3. if that doesnt work give your lucas a shot since by the the trans has some problem in it anyways. mechanics don't use these additives for a reason remember.

My 88 Cressida had the EXACT same problem. The transmission just wouldn't shift into second gear when the engine was cold. I had to drive it slowly for about half a mile before it would shift, or just let it warm up for a very long time. I ended up flushing the transmission a couple times with regular Valvoline Dexron III fluid (if you just pull the plug and drain it, you will only drain about a fifth of the fluid, thats why I drained it, ran it for a bit, drained it again, etc.).

Though it didn't make a difference at first, it slowly started to get better and better up to the point where the transmission would work perfectly! Now it shifts into second gear before I reach the end of my driveway :)
The great thing is that I got a really good deal on the car because the seller probably thought the transmission was shot. He was even very sneaky about it and let the vehicle warm up before I test drove it and picked it up after I bought it. Well who's laughing now? :)

I would be carefull of adding additives to automatic transmissions.......just flush your transmission with quality fluid a couple times and you're set. If I would have to do it again, I would use fully synthetic fluid.

I have an 86 Cressida that was having some of the same problems. It would not shift out of second and it would not downshift. I went and got LubeGard with the red cap. At first I put in the manufactures recommended amount, no real difference. Then after talking to a mechanic realizing I may need to replace the transmission again, I dumped the whole bottle in. Mind you it had new fluid, the tranny was a used one I put in because the one that was in the car was shot. Anyway the tranny has been running fine. It started working and now it shifts just like it supposed too. We have extream cold and hot here in Central Washington, so it has performed from -10F to over 100 F outside temp.

HElp! The 82 cressida type F (chilton) or Dexron?

Just drained my fluid since i overfilled and was slipping when cold.

now i read my chilton manual says Type F fluid and my Autozone says Dexron!
Help! My cress is sitting out there with no tranny fluid waiting for an answer...

type f won 3 to 2

Chilton manuel and Some maintenance chart and another Tranny ref chart said that old fords and SOME 77 to 81 vehicles use Type F.

While Autozone and a friend said use Dexron.

Was wary to let the tranny sit too long without fluid so i added 2 qts of Type F and will be checking to see if i overfill when the fluid settles in the stick before i complete the flush with the final 1/2 qrt.

If i was wrong let me know i could maybe change it out to dex.. along with the Oil change procedure for getting your oil filter off.

And Thanks!!!
Tee.

There is a clip that keeps it from backing out; just push the clip back with your finger and pull up on the dipstick; when you put the dipstick back, do the same thing and it automatically clips back over the top.

also, if you drain your tranny fluid you should drop the pan and change the filter as well; plus check the magnets for metal debris, wipe it all down and re-fill with correct amount of fluid; re-install and torque the pan bolts.
